Summary of PhD Program:
The Geospatial Systems CDT is training a world-leading generation of engineers, scientists and practitioners with advanced knowledge and skills in geospatial data science, including big data and artificial intelligence approaches. Successful applicants will conduct interdisciplinary PhD research with elective application into one or more of: smart cities; urban and infrastructure resilience; spatial mobility (transport); energy systems; sustainable spatial planning; structural monitoring; social inclusion and healthy living; environmental applications; the translation of geospatial methods to global challenges. Students will benefit from graduating with both a MRes in Geospatial Data Science (Year 1) and a PhD in Geospatial Systems (Year 4).
Application Deadline: Open until filled
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biosciences
Summary of PhD Program:
This studentship will provide training in the development of comprehensive assessments to identify animals who exhibit phenotypic traits associated with social cognitive disorders (e.g., autism and anxiety). The student will develop viral vector approaches for neural tracing combined with fMRI and electrophysiology in the social brain circuits of macaque and marmoset brains.
Application Deadline: 1 November 2023

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning and Molecular Dynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
Interested in machine learning (ML) for molecular modelling? This PhD project aims to develop machine learning inter-atomic potentials (MLIPs) for molecular materials and organic-inorganic interfaces relevant to energy storage technology and medicinal applications. The efficiency and accuracy of MLIPs have been thoroughly studied on fixed train/test datasets but the performance of these models in actual molecular dynamics (MD) remains poorly understood. Condensed phase molecular systems are particularly challenging to model owing to a large difference in scale between intra- and inter-molecular interactions.
Application Deadline: 29 September 2023
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geospatial Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
One of the processes that challenge this assumption is related to crustal deformation due to fluctuations in terrestrial water storage. The seasonal exchange of water between the continents and the oceans generates changes in surface loading that causes elastic deformation of the Earth’s surface. This project will focus on using GNSS observations to characterize crustal deformation caused by the redistribution of water mass across a broad range of timescales, and assess how this affects our ability to estimate meaningful secular velocities of the Earth’s crust. This will also improve our understanding of the broad-scale continental hydrological signals.
Application Deadline: 26th January 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Drug Delivery Systems with Cocrystals
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD, you will test different additives, such as surfactants, polymers and lipids. You will become an expert on a large number of techniques for physicochemical characterization, such as calorimetric, spectroscopic, and crystallographic, imaging, analytical (HPLC) and pharmaceutical processing. You will also gain in-depth training in equilibrium solubility and in vitro dissolution experiments.
Application Deadline: 24 November 2023
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science
Summary of PhD Program:
We live in a connected world with a range of devices, such as smart appliances, smartphones, wearables, smart cars, and others that compose the Internet of Things (IoT). Sensor data streams from these devices are processed not only in the clouds but often in the edge computing clusters to increase system responsiveness, reduce network traffic, and preserve energy resources. The research aims to develop algorithms for deploying sensor data processing on the available hardware infrastructure – devices/edge clusters/clouds – to ensure the desired system properties. Research work will include a series of experiments to analyze the operation of typical Internet of Things systems, their modelling and analysis.
Application Deadline: 01 October 2023
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human iPSC-derived Sensory Neurons
Summary of PhD Program:
Neuropathic pain is caused by a lesion of the somatosensory system, which enables the perception of pain. Several reports suggest the involvement mTORC1 in chronic pain. Our research showed that the inhibition of mTORC1 reduced itch behaviour induced by histamine in mouse model of pain. Inhibition of Histamine H3 receptors resulted in the suppression of mTORC1. We have previously used patient iPSC-derived neurons with Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) mutation to understand the effect of knocking down TSC function (mTORC1 hyperactivity) on neuronal network behaviours. We have also generated TSC stable KO iPSCs using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. We are now planning to use those models to generate sensory neurons to understand the abnormal pain pathology in patients with TSC mutation and examine the effect of several pharmacological agents targeting histamine pathways on the aberrant neural functional behaviours.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Hybrid approaches seek to combine data-driven modelling, which are more readily incorporated into plant diagnostic and control systems, with the basic physical laws. Existing data-driven approaches are not constrained by conservation laws, so can predict impossible situations and are not robust on extrapolation. Existing fundamental models are complex and often ill-constrained, time consuming to develop, and cannot be transferred between processes. Hybrid models can be developed to a complexity appropriate to data available. The project will also address important scientific challenges in intelligent industry 5.0, future energy and digitalisation of process industries.
Application Deadline: 29th September 2023
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in cellular response to hypoxia
Summary of PhD Program:
The cellular response to hypoxia (low oxygen) is critical to life and is primarily coordinated by a family of transcription factors known as Hypoxia Inducible Factors (HIFs). Hypoxia and HIF activation are prominent features in many diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration, making the targeting of the HIF pathway therapeutically attractive. Although the activation of HIF in hypoxia is well characterised, a significant unanswered question is how HIF transcriptional specificity is controlled at the chromatin level. One mechanism could be through the HIF-dependent recruitment of specific chromatin remodelers.
Application Deadline: 1 November 2023
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Safety Research Collaborative (PSRC)
Summary of PhD Program:
The Newcastle NIHR Patient Safety Research Collaborative (PSRC), is a partnership between three universities (Newcastle, Northumbria, and Queen Mary London) and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Post-graduate students will join a vibrant team of researchers within the PSRC.The interdisciplinary series of PhD projects form part of the PSRC and aim to achieve a step-change improvement in safety within the health and social care systems for people with MLTCs.
