1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Evaluating Greenland glacier
Summary of PhD Program:
You will utilise a combined approach of remote sensing, field measurements, and numerical modelling to identify and parameterise the controlling factors for glacier retreat. Specifically, you will investigate various physical processes acting at the ice-lake boundary to improve an existing calving flowline model for lake-terminating glaciers. The insights of the flowline modelling will be used to develop data-driven parameterisations for calving and subaqueous melt that can be applied in an ice sheet model (IMAUICE and/or UFEMISM). The model will be set up for a selected region in South Greenland to understand the impact of climate change on outlet glaciers.
Application Deadline: 25 August 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Global Scale Stable Isotope Measurements on Atmospheric Methane
Summary of PhD Program:
In this position you will join a and be responsible for measuring and interpreting the stable isotopic composition of atmospheric methane. Methane is emitted from different sources to the atmosphere and carries a distinct isotopic composition that is characteristic for the respective source process. This composition can be used to quantify the relative contributions of methane from different source categories in the atmosphere, and methane isotope measurements are becoming a standard tool for source partitioning.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Generative AI Art
Summary of PhD Program:
The widespread use of Generative AI Art tools and services and the dissemination of an astounding amount of AI-generated images into everyday outlets are discussed broadly. However, we lack a general understanding of how these tools will change the labour market, the art market, and production in creative industries. Beyond these obvious impact points, these tools bring the potential of changing the creation and consumption of material culture in unimagined ways.
Application Deadline: 28 August 2023
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developmental Biology
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate who will join our research efforts to understand how epithelial cells functionally specialise, function and become polarised. Cell polarity – the asymmetric distribution of components and functions within a cell along a directional axis – is a key property necessary for cells to carry out their specialised functions and organise the 3D multicellular body. Two of the most abundant polarised cell types of the animal body are epithelial cells and neurons. Epithelial cells establish functionally distinct apical and basolateral domains to form selectively permeable barriers, while neurons form molecularly distinct axons and dendrites to enable directional information flow.
Application Deadline: 14 August 2023
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in C. elegans neurobiology
Summary of PhD Program:
The microtubule cytoskeleton is key to organise and shape neurons. It provides strength to the cell as well as the “transportation roads” to organise the intracellular environment. Through specific organisation of the microtubules, cargoes can be selectively transported from the cell body to either axons or dendrite, which is essential for their respective functions. In the Harterink lab we aim to understand the molecular mechanisms that underly this specific microtubule organisation.
Application Deadline: 14 August 2023
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spatial inequality in Water-Energy
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will build on a social and health science perspective, with a focus on a livelihoods approach to the WEF security, which includes social, economic, and human conditions of rural households embedded in particular biophysical and infrastructural conditions. By taking the livelihoods approach, the PhD project will determine vulnerability and resilience of people to changes that affect their health conditions in particular places and spaces.
Application Deadline: 21 August 2023
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in climate change and spatial inequality in Water
Summary of PhD Program:
South Africa is one of the most unevenly developed countries in the world. About 33% of South Africa’s population lives in rural areas with limited access to basic services such as clean and safe water, affordable and clean energy, and balanced and nutritious diets. This is exacerbated by climate change and has direct and indirect impacts on public health and wellbeing. This project will assess spatial inequality in water‐energy‐food security, the implications for public health in rural South Africa and how this will be affected by climate change. It will also identify future‐proof interventions to enhance the resilience of vulnerable rural communities to health crises.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Water-carbon-nutrient dynamics
Summary of PhD Program:
RESHAPE is a new interdisciplinary research programme funded by NWO that aims to develop change-pathways to increase the resilience of Dutch sand landscapes in face of ongoing climate change. It focuses on droughts, floods, biodiversity loss and deteriorating water quality. The water system of the sandy area goes far beyond the visible ditches and rivers. It is especially the invisible water flows through subsurface and plants that we can influence and improve. Moreover, in a resilient sand landscape, the spatial networks of water, economy, society and governance are strongly intertwined. Within RESHAPE we study how to stimulate these spatial dependencies, which often start with water and can catalyze a change towards a future-proof sand landscape.
Application Deadline: 15 September 2023
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Governance for more resilient landscapes in Dutch sandy soils
Summary of PhD Program:
RESHAPE external link is a new interdisciplinary research programme funded by NWO that aims to develop change pathways to increase the resilience of Dutch sand landscapes in the face of ongoing climate change. Think of droughts, floods, biodiversity loss and deteriorating water quality. The water system of the sandy area goes far beyond the visible ditches, puddles and rivers. It is above all the invisible water flows through soil and plants, that we can shift and improve. Moreover, in a resilient sand landscape, the spatial networks of water, economy, society and governance are strongly intertwined. Within RESHAPE we study how to stimulate these spatial dependencies, which can catalyze a change towards a future-proof sand landscape.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Elucidate the Molecular Mechanism of Signal Peptide Cleavage
Summary of PhD Program:
In the PhD position to elucidate the molecular mechanism of signal peptide cleavage you will unravel the molecular mechanism of signal peptide recruitment and proteolysis by the Signal Peptidase Complex (SPC) and its regulation. Many proteins use N-terminal signal peptides to target them to the secretory pathway of the cell. The fast majority of these signal peptides is removed from the mature protein by the SPC located in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). Despite its central role in protein maturation, the molecular details of SPC proteolytic activity and regulation is largely unexplored. Recently the Förster group resolved the apo-structure of the human SPC’s.
Application Deadline: 28 August 2023
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in gravitational-wave astrophysics
Summary of PhD Program:
The Institute for Gravitational and Subatomic Physics (GRASP) at Utrecht University is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate in gravitational-wave astrophysics. As the successful candidate, you will work with real and simulated gravitational wave data from existing detectors as well as envisaged next-generation observatories such as Einstein Telescope, use statistical tools such as Bayesian analysis to assess what the challenges will be, and develop novel methodology to analyse the data accurately. With the developed methods, you will likely be placing much more stringent bounds on fundamental constraints from third-generation detectors.
Application Deadline: 14 September 2023
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in cryo-Electron Microscopy and Tomography of Sperm Maturation
Summary of PhD Program:
Sperm are highly specialised cells whose structure is optimised for one defined function: to deliver the male genetic material to the female egg cell. Although the distinct sperm ultrastructure has been known for many years thanks to electron microscopy, the molecular details of how sperm gets its distinctive shape are still lacking. Over the past few years the Cellular Structural Biology of Fertilization research group of Dr. Tzviya Zeev-Ben-Mordehai external link has pioneered the use of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and tomography (cryo-ET) to study mature sperm at the molecular level.
