1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

The long-term goal of this project is to characterize in-situ how hydrogen migrates through different containment material and in particular geological rock types with different textures, structures and mineralogy. In this project you will be working together with a strong multi-disciplinary group of researchers from fluid mechanics, ore geology, experimental mechanics and X-ray science. As a PRISMAS PhD-student you will be co-supervised by a beamline scientist at MAX IV giving access to cutting-edge synchrotron technologies and instrumentation. You will spend three to twelve months at MAX IV and at least three months at an industrial partner.

Application Deadline: May 2, 2023

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in machine elements

Summary of PhD Program:

The FINAST project (Research and Innovation in Norrbotten for Advanced Green Steel Production and Manufacturing) is an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Fund for Just Transition and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. FINAST contributes to the green transition and a carbon dioxide-neutral steel industry through research efforts in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, Swerim, and SSAB.

The research activities are focused on both the process chain downstream from steelmaking and deal with fossil-free steel properties and performance, as well as fossil-free steelmaking with a focus on using hydrogen and bio-based raw materials. As a PhD student in the FINAST project, you will work in an interdisciplinary research environment, in close collaboration with research institutes and industry, and contribute to the steel industry’s transition work towards carbon neutrality.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cyber-Physical Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work in a project on secure data sharing in decentralized systems for Digital Product Passports (DPPs) associated with Creaternity’s graduate school. Creaternity is one of the future areas of research at the Luleå University of Technology. It gathers researchers all over the university for research on sustainable material use in a connected and circular economy.

DPPs will be mandated for many products, e.g., batteries for electric vehicles, and will carry up-to-date information over the product life cycle. In this, you will focus on the protocols and mechanisms needed to realize and use DPPs for the to facilitate sustainable development, use, repair, recycling, or disposal of products. Moreover, the improvement of product design, industrial production and processes, and the end-of-life management of products and materials will be addressed. For the realization of DPPs, distributed and decentralized systems will be investigated, e.g., blockchains and distributed hash tables.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Solid Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

The FINAST project (Research and Innovation in Norrbotten for Advanced Green Steel Production and Manufacturing) is an interdisciplinary research project funded by the EU Fund for Justice Transition and the Agency for Growth. The project contributes to the green transition and a carbon dioxide-neutral steel industry through research efforts in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, Swerim and SSAB. The research activities are both directed towards the process chain downstream the actual steel manufacturing focusing on properties and performance of the fossil-free steel as well as fossil-free steelmaking focusing on the usage of hydrogen and bio-based raw materials.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Signal Processing

Summary of PhD Program:

Future 6G networks are expected to support new sensing functions. Communication networks will not only measure the location and speed of various nearby objects, but also map the physical context around those objects. This will be very important in the ongoing industrial green transition: the envisioned sensing capabilities will enable networks to identify, authenticate, locate, and track things and map their surroundings. Industries will be able to track flows of raw materials, semi-products, final products, and waste – this information is critically needed to then control and optimize production processes, possibly through the appropriate use of digital twins. We will develop algorithms for the above functions.

Our research will take advantage of the latest advances in materials engineering, specifically the development of electronically configurable meta surfaces, surfaces densely composed of many passive reflective elements, that can change the spatial properties of reflected radio waves.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Metallurgy – Extraction of metals

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the project is to develop new knowledge for the recovery of antimony, bismuth, and arsenic together with copper from a secondary material from the base metal industry. The research will be carried out to gain a deeper fundamental understanding of the link between the residue properties, needed separation and purification steps to product quality and yield. Aspects related to the environment and economy in recovering metals and handling residues shall also be considered. The project will be based on experimental studies in a lab, characterization of materials theoretical calculations using thermodynamic modelling, and mapping of materials and methods via literature and communication with experienced engineers and researchers in the industry and at research organizations.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fluid and Experimental Mechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

The project will tackle two important problems in cancer research. The detection of low-grade tumors during brain surgery as well as the early detection of spreading cancer through blood sample analysis. Raman spectroscopy has proven to be a good tool for in-situ examinations of biopsies from brain tumors and it has been shown that different degrees of cancer as well as circulating tumor cells can be correctly classified by the method. The project is divided into two areas; in the first application, Raman spectroscopy is used during neurosurgery to identify tumor boundaries. In the second application, a microfluidics system is developed to separate circulating cancer cells from blood, which are subsequently analyzed with Raman spectroscopy.
