1. Postdoctoral Position in the HYDROGENi team

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

HYDROGENi is a Centre for environment-friendly energy research (FME) dedicated to the research and innovations within hydrogen and ammonia needed to meet the 2030 and 2050 goals of the Norwegian hydrogen road map. HYDROGENi’s activities are a collaborative effort from Norwegian and European partners (industry, universities, and research institutes) that cover the entire hydrogen value chain.

Hydrogen’s role in the energy transition was previously thought to be a “clean” alternative to fossil fuels in cars. However, it can also replace fossil fuels in industrial processes, such as coal in the steel industry, and in the maritime sector. Hydrogen is now considered to be one of the main drivers of the green shift. To realise hydrogen’s full potential, there are important knowledge- and technology gaps that need to be filled.

4. Postdoctoral Position in the project Wall2Cycle: Coordination between cell wall integrity and cell cycle activity in plants

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Plant cell walls are relevant to find new strategies to improve crop yield. A fundamental element is the cell wall integrity maintenance mechanism. Previous results indicated alterations in cell wall integrity perception modulate cell cycle activity1,2. Intriguingly, plants with altered cell walls are more resistant to certain stresses and may even grow better. These two facts refer to a classic topic of plant science: the “growth-defence trade-off”, which means plants either allocate resources to growth or to defence.

With this project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, we want to understand how cell wall integrity and cell cycle activity are coordinated in Arabidopsis thaliana, thus possibly also understanding this trade-off. The results will create novel opportunities to address one of the biggest challenges of this century: to improve crop plant performance in a sustainable way.

6. Postdoctoral Position in Electric Power Engineering- “Mechanical Stresses of Transformer Insulation due to Frequent Start-Stop Operations”

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Applicants are invited for a 2.5-year position as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Electric Power Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway. The candidate will be part of the High Voltage Technology (HVT) research group. The position is funded through the KPN-project DynaLoad.

Power transformers are critical components in the power system and failure of such units have a large impact on the society. The emerging power system with intermittent sources, strong market fluctuations and new loading conditions from rapid charging of batteries results in new stresses on power transformers. Frequent starts and stops with heavy temperature variations can cause fatigue and reduced mechanical strength.

Transformer windings are made of copper wrapped in paper and supported by high density pressboard. The winding is subjected to a fixed clamping pressure to increase its mechanical strength and ability to withstand the large forces from short circuit currents. The windings are then submerged in oil for further electrical insulation and cooling.

8. Postdoctoral Position in the Role of Nuclear Power in a Renewable Energy System

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

This project will look at nuclear power generation from a Nordic and a Norwegian viewpoint. Furthermore, the project will analyze the potential impact of nuclear energy on the power system and its industrial applications, such as hydrogen production, district heating, and industrial process heating. The objectives can be divided into the following areas:

Study the potential role of nuclear power to assist integrating renewables in the Nordic power system, and how its expansion affects power prices and power flows. A key research question would be to investigate how increased baseload generation would impact the dispatch of hydropower plants, and whether this could alleviate flexibility that can be used to balance a higher share of variable renewable energy.

Investigate the opportunity to scale up hydrogen production and utilize low-carbon heat. Evaluate the role of nuclear can power for production of clean hydrogen and the benefits of releasing the electric power system for other challenges in the energy transition. Map technology maturity and establish the potential for hydrogen from nuclear energy (“pink hydrogen”). Moreover, thermochemical hydrogen production in advanced reactors with temperatures between 500 and 1000 degrees Celsius can be evaluated as a supplementary solution. In addition, the potential role of nuclear as a contribution to scaling up district heating and industrial heat processes will also be assessed.

14. Postdoctoral Position in Multi-Lane Electric Powertrains for Clean Regional Aviation

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Air travel is an important supplement to other means of regional transportation and in some regions the only viable solution. However, the regional transport market is highly competitive, and air travel must demonstrate that it can compete with hi-speed trains, cars or coaches. One major issue is the perception of the high CO2 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by planes for these short journeys. Hybridization of the propulsion system enables combining the technical components benefits, thereby achieving an overall efficiency improvement. It is a concept well understood by the general public, due to the hybridization of automobiles, and can bring a real impact on the reduction of GHG emissions.
