Position Description:
Are you passionate about understanding the effects of fires on tropical forests? Do you aspire to contribute to cutting-edge research in forest ecology and management? We have two exciting PhD positions available at the Forest Ecology and Forest Management Chair Group (FEM) at Wageningen University that offer a unique opportunity to investigate fire resilience of Amazonian forests in Bolivia, based on permanent plot networks and a fire experiment. Both PhD projects will assess the impact of fire intensity and fire frequency on the resistance and recovery of tropical trees and forests, and will work in seasonally dry Chiquitanía forest and evergreen wet Amazon forests in Bolivia.

3. Funded PhD Vacancy in ‘Seed dispersal shapes tropical forest succession’ (Seeds 4 Success)
Position Description:
Tropical forests are global hotspots of biodiversity. Although they are often deforested for agricultural use, they have the ability to regrow naturally on abandoned fields. These secondary forests cover large areas, have the potential to recover biodiversity and carbon, and are the basis for ecosystem restoration. The challenge is to understand and predict when and where forests are able to recover. A key condition for recovery is that sufficient forest cover, seed trees, and animal dispersers are nearby to guarantee dispersal of new seeds from the surrounding landscape to the focal patch.
