5. Fully Funded PhD Position in snow processes on coastal ice caps

Summary of PhD Program:

The Center for Changing Mountains aims to understand and address the consequences of climate and environmental change in mountain areas. With a primary focus on the Scandinavian mountains, the center brings together climate science, ecology, hydrology, geoscience, and social sciences to explore how mountain systems are changing – and how we can build resilience for the future.

Application Deadline: October 1, 2025

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in snow processes in the mountains

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project aims to quantify the role of snowdrifts in mountain accumulation and sublimation. Simulations of snowdrifts in local and regional climate models are poorly quantified, leading to uncertainty in estimates of mass loss through sublimation and redistribution of snow. The PhD candidate will develop and conduct a field campaign focusing on observing how snowdrifts affect sublimation and snow distribution in catchment areas and at regional scales.

Application Deadline: October 1, 2025

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will investigate how value perceptions and views of mountains change in the face of changing environmental conditions and between different user and stakeholder groups. As mountain areas change – often into new and unexplored states as a result of climate change and human impact – the need to understand how these processes affect the way people perceive and value mountain landscapes increases.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Global Change Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will investigate patterns, drivers and consequences of vegetation change in mountainous areas. The overall goals are to (i) better understand processes that influence variation and context-dependence in biodiversity change, (ii) assess and compare the impact of multiple global drivers of change, and (iii) explore the consequences of changes in biodiversity and vegetation for ecosystem functions.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quaternary geology and paleoclimate

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to investigate the retreat of mountain glaciers in Norway by comparing patterns from the post-Little Ice Age (LIA) period—primarily driven by natural climate variability—with contemporary retreat patterns influenced by anthropogenic climate change. The research will combine advanced remote sensing techniques with ultra-high-resolution analyses of lake sediments to reconstruct glacier dynamics across multiple regions.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrology and Climate Impacts in Mountain Regions

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project examines how glacier retreat and climate variability alter the terrestrial water cycle and impact hydroclimatic extremes—particularly floods—in mountain catchments. The goal is to understand long-term changes in runoff regimes and flood hazards by combining climate-driven (glacier-)hydrological modelling with reconstructions of past flood events.
