3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Emerging Urban Emissions and their Impact on Atmospheric Composition

Summary of PhD Program:

Urban aerosol particles pose one of the greatest global risks to human health. A substantial fraction of these particles is secondary – formed through atmospheric reactions of emitted trace gases. While motor vehicle emissions have been reduced through regulation, attention is shifting to understudied sources such as volatile chemical products (VCPs) and cooking emissions, which are now emerging as key precursors to ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban areas.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Filming nanocatalysts for renewable energies

Summary of PhD Program:

At the Electrocatalysis department of Prof. Karl Mayrhofer, we offer a PhD position within the team Nanoanalysis of Electrochemical Processes. Lead by Dr. Andreas Hutzler, the team is investigating degradation mechanisms within the framework of green energy conversion and climate change. The open position aims to understand catalyst stability at the nanoscale during electrochemical processes via operando liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy (LP-TEM).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Analysis and modeling of biomolecule functioning in soil systems towards digital twinning of sustainable carbon farming

Summary of PhD Program:

The work is part of the joint project “Towards sustainable production by regenerative agriculture and agroecology in a changing climate” (ReGenFarm). Together with Bayer Crop Science, IBG-3 and IBG-4 work in action field 4 to establish a molecular basis of carbon storage in soil. The research relates structural-physical properties with chemical and biochemical analyses at the molecular level to identify biomolecules (organic “glue” compounds) that promote soil structure and carbon storage.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Design and development of an in-house X-ray beamline for long term operando investigation of chemical hydrogen storage reactors

Summary of PhD Program:

At the institute division “Catalytic Interfaces for Chemical Hydrogen Storage” (INW-1, Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Steinrück), we investigate mechanisms and processes in (electro)chemical energy storage systems. For the purposes, we develop and use advanced (X-ray-based) methods as well as modern data reduction und data evaluation methods, including machine learning and big data analytics.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI-guided design of scaffold-free DNA nanostructures

Summary of PhD Program:

The field of structural DNA nanotechnology holds a great promise for the realization of all-DNA building blocks with arbitrary complexity and shape at the sub-nanometer scale. Such structures can be used to construct artificial cell mimics and new materials. A scaffold-free DNA tile assembly is a programmable method for the formation of two- and three-dimensional DNA structures which self-assemble from a number of interacting single-stranded DNA molecules.
