1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Direct recycling of Lithium-ion Batteries Using Novel Nanoemulsions
Summary of PhD Program:
In 2025, in the UK alone, a stockpile of ca. 70,000-106,000 units of obsolete end-of-first-life EV batteries are waiting to be recycled. The challenge posing across the entire industry is how to recycle and remanufacture EV cells without destructive recovery of precious metals via legacy processes such as pyro/hydrometallurgy, which are the current industry standards. A recent Leicester-developed and patent-pending technology demonstrated success in separation of black mass from different sources into highly pure cathode and anode components using ultrasound-generated vegetable oil-in-water nano emulsions.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital audio-phenotyping system for preventive screening and early diagnostics of chronic pulmonary disease using a smartphone and recorded breath sound
Summary of PhD Program:
Asthma and COPD are common, yet over 50% of individuals remain undiagnosed, partly due to reliance on spirometry which is challenging to perform correctly in primary care. There is therefore an unmet need for a simple, reliable and easy to perform test to detect asthma and COPD. This project will partner with Eupnoos, a small to medium-sized enterprise (SME) that have developed a smartphone application aimed at detecting obstructive airways disease (asthma and COPD).

3. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Life Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
PhD scholarship is available to a student recruited to the University of Leicester MSc Cancer Cell and Molecular Biology or MSc Molecular Genetics in January 2025. The PhD scholarship will be available from January 2026 on completion of the MSc course and consist of a full stipend (currently £20,780 per year) for 3.5 yrs, research costs and a travel and training fund. It will attract a home fee waiver, with a full international fee waiver available competitively.

Glomerular diseases are a leading cause of kidney failure worldwide.1 IgA nephropathy (IgAN), IgA vasculitis (IgAV) and lupus nephritis (LN) are glomerular diseases that confer a high lifetime risk of progression to kidney failure, and predominantly affect young adults.2 Even with the recent approval of drugs that modulate glomerular haemodynamics or inflammation, most patients still progress to kidney failure.3,4 This confers an increased lifetime risk of morbidity and mortality.
