Candidates interested in fully funded PhD positions can check the details and may apply as soon as possible. Interested and eligible applicants may submit their online application for PhD programs via the University’s Online Application Portal.

1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The Ph D student will be accepted to a Ph D education at SLU and get a permanent employment at Kopparfors Skogar. The supervisor group is led by Thomas Ranius. Trees are retained at harvesting operations. In this project, it will be evaluated how much tree retention contributes to the landscape-level amount of microhabitats available for organisms associated with large trees or dead wood. Moreover, the life-boating function of retained trees for lichens will be evaluated. This will be done by field studies, analyses of already collected data, and a meta-analysis of published studies.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Forest Economics

Summary of PhD Program:

Forests support humanity when they provide critical biodiversity habitat, contribute to climate roles and supply vital wood products, among many benefits. But compared to forest products such as timber, biodiversity does not have a defined value in markets and forest landowners are not compensated for this critical service to society. In this project we will study the prospect of financially compensating private landowners for more biodiverse Swedish forests. There are several tools that could help compensate landowners and we focus on forest biodiversity credits (FBCs) to represent measurable units of biodiversity that can express long-term improvements for which landowners could get financial compensation.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ecological consequences of pesticide resistance evolution in insects

Summary of PhD Program:

This project is in the research field of applied evolutionary ecology, aiming at understanding ecological and evolutionary processes that may be relevant for the development of sustainable plant protection. Specifically, the thesis work will be devoted to study ecological consequences following pesticide resistance evolution in the green-veined white, Pieris napi. The project will include fieldwork, experimental evolution and behavioural studies that involves different trophic levels.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Benefit of Broadleaves on Bats, Birds and Beetles

Summary of PhD Program:

Broadleafification, i.e. the process of increasing the share of broadleaf tree species within conifer-dominated forests, is a promising strategy for biodiversity conservation in managed (hemi)boreal forests. Promoting broadleaf trees and deadwood could significantly benefit biodiversity, including many species on the Swedish Red List. Despite significant efforts to restore forests towards broadleaf stands, the ecological and biodiversity effects of these measures remain understudied in boreal forests.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rethinking Perches – Improving Hen Welfare under Pressure

Summary of PhD Program:

Our project, “Keel Under Pressure (KUP)”, takes a bold and innovative approach to this problem. We are exploring an entirely new perspective: how the design and variation of perches, a key feature of housing systems, can influence keel bone health, behaviour and overall hen welfare. This is your chance to be part of groundbreaking research that can shape the future of sustainable egg production.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in How do oomycete plant pathogens shape plant microbiomes in agricultural systems?

Summary of PhD Program:

Plants, like humans have developed adaptive immune systems to enable them to respond to disease threats. In parallel to what has recently been shown in human gut health, microbial diversity on both leaves and roots is an important factor in overall plant health. However, the connections between plant disease and plant-associated microbial communities are not well known. Prevalent plant pathology theories of plant disease and immunity based on laboratory data are not always consistent with ecological studies from agricultural fields.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in climate change adaptation of forest ecosystems

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project is part of a larger research program called ANAFOR. ANAFOR is a multi-disciplinary cooperation between SLU and the universities of Stockholm, Södertörn and Uppsala. Specifically, we will reveal where and under what conditions the targeted use of AM of eight southern tree species, and other plants, is best suited to overcoming climate change threats to natural and production forest systems, and identify the risks of, obstacles to, and opportunities for, integrating AM into governance frameworks.
