Summary of PhD Program:

The Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering is looking for a candidate to fill a PhD position to develop catalysts for the conversion of CO2 into higher alcohols. At LESE, we aim to advance materials and processes to address the important challenge of producing fuels, electricity, and chemicals in efficient and sustainable ways. An important line of research focuses on the development of materials to close the CO2 cycle and ultimately allow societies to approach net zero emissions. The current PhD position is funded by the national centre of competence in research (NCCR Catalysis).

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is associated to a project on phase-field modeling of fracture. The PhD project aims at developing cutting edge models for the fracture behavior of quasi-brittle materials, relevant for a real application of interest to an industrial partner that will provide experimental data. The PhD student will work within a novel theoretical and computational framework for phase-field fracture recently proposed by other members of the Computational Mechanics Group and develop it further from both the theoretical and the computational point of view.

Our group applies state-of-the-art synthetic biology principles to engineer human cells and create next-generation cell-based therapies targeting cancer as well as metabolic, neurodegenerative, autoimmune and infectious diseases. Leveraging innovative platforms such as novel biosensors, gene switches, genetic closed-loop circuits, and chemical structures that interface with and actuate cellular activities, we design programmable cellular implants and nanocatalytic devices capable of responding to a wide spectrum of biochemical cues (e.g., glucose, ATP, disease biomarkers) and physical stimuli (e.g., light, electromagnetic fields, acoustic signals).
