2. Fully Funded PhD Position in novel therapeutics against pneumococcal diseases

Summary of PhD Program:

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Parasitology

Summary of PhD Program:

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis (small fox tapeworm) is the highest ranking foodborne parasitic zoonosis in Europe. The metacestodes (larval stage) of E. multilocularis grow mainly in the liver in a tumor-like and infiltrative manner, and frequently form metastases in other organs. AE occurs in humans, dogs, monkeys and other mammals, and causes death if left untreated. AE cannot be cured by medication, as the current drugs in use are parasitostatic and do not kill the parasite. For these reasons, novel drug treatment options are urgently needed.

Summary of PhD Program:

In the first project, we investigate the courses of key psychiatric symptoms (e.g., suicidality; psychotic symptoms) during acute phases in patients during inpatient stays in our clinic’s emergency center. To ensure the most intensive monitoring possible, the method of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is used, which will be supplemented in the future by modern technologies (e.g., the use of wearables). The goal is to record changes in the experiences and behavior of adolescents during phases of acute danger to themselves or others in order to specifically develop diagnostic assessments and interventions.
