8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating and fostering socio-technical transformation at the nexus of electricity, heat, and mobility
Summary of PhD Program:
Creating a more sustainable future requires deep, society-wide changes that go beyond improving or implementing individual technologies. Rather, it requires changes in practices, regulations, technologies, infrastructures, markets, user preferences, and culture, not only within but also beyond the boundaries of individual socio-technical systems such as housing, electricity, heating, food, and mobility. However, both academic research and policy efforts often concentrate on improving sustainability in single socio-technical systems.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in mathematical modeling in imaging optics
Summary of PhD Program:
For an imaging optical system, the deviations of a perfect system are the so-called optical aberrations. An optical system can be described by an optical map that connects positions and directions at the object plane with positions and directions at the target or image plane. For an ideal system, this map is linear. Any deviation from this linear map is an aberration. To derive aberration theory for (complex) optical systems, the mathematically most sound approach is to use Lie operators. This mathematical framework was developed in the nineties of the previous century and successfully applied to normal lens and mirror systems. The relation between the Lie algebraic approach and the well-known Seidel aberrations are known for normal lenses.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in mathematical modeling of scattering
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal in freeform design is to compute the shapes of optical surfaces (reflector/lens) that convert a given source distribution, typically LED, into a desired target distribution. For ideal sources and optical surfaces we can solve the so-called Monge-Ampère equation to find the freeform shapes of the surfaces. Scattering elements however send light rays in multiple directions. They are used to reduce glare in optical systems. Current design methods that include scattering use a slow iterative process. In this project we will develop fast design methods for 3D optical systems with scattering surfaces.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in ML accelerated simulations and uncertainty quantification of composites
Summary of PhD Program:
Natural fiber reinforced materials are increasingly used as environmentally friendly alternatives for composite materials, due to the sustainability and circularity of the natural fibers (e.g. hemp, flex, bamboo). Natural fiber reinforced composites have applications in different engineering fields, including construction (used for insulation and load bearing members), automotive (used for interior components), and consumer products (e.g. in sporting products). The natural fibers used in these composites are sensitive to moisture-induced and chemical degradation.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-Objective Optimization in Imaging Optics
Summary of PhD Program:
Imaging optics involves the design and optimization of imaging systems (cameras, telescopes, …) to most accurately capture and reproduce an image. This is especially relevant for high-interest research topics like optical metrology in chip production. The design process in imaging optics is inherently multi-objective, involving different competing performance measures. This could be on a more systematic level the interplay of quality, cost and manufacturability but also image quality itself can be described by competing performance measures.
