1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanoscale magnetism-defect interaction

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD candidate at the Laboratory of Metal Physics and Technology (LMPT) to explore the relationship between the nanoscale microstructure and magnetic properties in materials and in particular Sm-Co permanent magnets. This research will contribute to a deeper understanding of fundamental metal properties and enable the design of next-generation magnetic materials. The goal is to optimize them for technological applications, including renewable energy systems and medical magnetic resonance imaging.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in modeling fracture in soft materials

Summary of PhD Program:

The Computational Mechanics of Building Materials in the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich has an opening for a PhD student in modeling fracture in soft materials. The Computational Mechanics of Building Materials (CMBM) aims to understand and predict mechanical failure in materials and structures. By combining numerical modeling tools with tailored laboratory experiments and theoretical models, we create a holistic perspective on mechanical failure, bridging the gap between material behavior at the small scale and principles governing catastrophic failure at the system level. CMBM is a highly interdisciplinary and international research team.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Robotics in Hydrocephalus Research

Summary of PhD Program:

Hydrocephalus is a severe and common neurological disorder that occurs in many different forms from childhood to old age. Our research focuses primarily on normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in elderly patients, which affects approximately 6% of people over the age of 80. The disorder presents with an enlargement of the brain ventricles, presumably due to a mismatch of secretion and resorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Patients exhibit symptoms such as mental impairment and gait disturbance.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Seed Pathogens and Masting

Summary of PhD Program:

The reproduction of many plants is characterized by mast seeding, where boom and bust seed production years are correlated amongst individuals within populations due to their common response to a climatic trigger. Masting is thought to have evolved to foil seed predators, whose populations shrink during non-mast years when overall seed availability is low and cannot grow their populations fast enough to consume all seeds during mast years, allowing some seeds to ‘escape’ consumption.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Peptide-Based Drug Discovery

Summary of PhD Program:

The four-year project is co-funded by Novo Nordisk and will be supervised by Prof. Nathalie Grob (ETHZ) in cooperation Novo Nordisk, offering a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of academia and industry, leveraging cutting-edge technology to make a real-world impact in peptide drug discovery. Short research visits (< 3 months) at the Novo Nordisk research site in Copenhagen and access to high-throughput instrumentation are planned throughout the project. It will be a great advantage for candidates to have prior experience in peptide synthesis, mammalian tissue culture, and mass spectrometry.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D Cell-Based Tissue Simulation Framework

Summary of PhD Program:

ETH Zurich is a world-leading university dedicated to advancing science and technology. The advertised position is based in the Computational Biology (CoBi) group led by Prof. Dagmar Iber, which uses advanced imaging and computational tools to develop data-driven, mechanistic models of biological systems. Located in Basel, the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) provides a vibrant research environment at the interface of biology, engineering, and medicine, and is surrounded by leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in quantum metamaterials

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project aims to develop a solution-derived metal-oxides (typically barium titanate or lithium niobate), characterize its nonlinear optical properties and design metasurfaces to explore polycrystalline materials as quantum light sources. This will include exploring chemical synthesis routes for ternary metal-oxides and combining these with nanopatterning methods as direct soft nanoimprint lithography, but including also the standard nanofabrication cleanroom processes flows such as lithography, etching and electron microscopy.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data-Driven Nonlinear Model Reduction

Summary of PhD Program:

The objective of the position is to work within a Swiss-French consortium of academic institutions to solve challenging model reduction problems using SSM-reduction and compare this approach with other model reductin methods, such as dynamic mode decompostion (DMD) or neural network-based methods. The level of the targeted problems will require further mathematical and algorithmic developments over the current state of data-driven SSM reduction. The PhD position will be based either within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering or the Department of Mathematics at ETH Zurich, dependinhg on the candidate’s background and preferences.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in computational neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

Language is a skill unique to humans among other animals. However, little is known about the neurophysiological processes that enable the construction of complex sentences. New electrodes now allow researchers to record many single neurons in humans during speech tasks, offering new possibilities for developing theoretical models that will help us better understand the neural dynamics underlying word and sentence formation.
