1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Wireless systems are omnipresent in our daily life, but it is far from perfect, especially for professional applications, where stable quality of service with bounded latency, guaranteed packet delivery rate is a must. Today, we still see Wi-Fi coverage is far from uniform, high variations of the Wi-Fi signal strength can be observed at different locations. Co-located Wi-Fi access points sharing the same spectrum compete against each other rather than collaborate to serve users. In this PhD position, you will research solutions to tackle these issues and improve wireless performance and efficiency together with the members of Software-Defined Radio team in IDLab.
Application Deadline: Dec 31, 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electromechanical
Summary of PhD Program:
As a PhD student, you will contribute to the development of multiphysics (electromagnetic & thermal) models for windings of electric motors. Also, you will study how the motor design can be modified to make the windings in the machine more robust against thermal variations or mechanical vibrations. The work includes a significant experimental part, i.e. making prototypes of stators and test the concepts for sustainable windings. The project has a user group of companies, which are active in enameled wire, impregnation and potting techniques, electric machine design and electric machine manufacturing or repair.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Science
Summary of PhD Program:
Many industrial and healthcare applications demand real-time knowledge of the location, status, and activities of both people and equipment. Traditionally, this has required separate, specialized wireless systems for communication, radar-based sensing, and localization—each relying on dedicated hardware. However, the emerging field of joint wireless communication, sensing, and localization offers a unified approach that combines data transmission with simultaneous environmental awareness and position estimation. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, in particular, stands out as a strong candidate for this integration due to its large bandwidth, which enables high-precision localization, robust communication, and fine-grained sensing.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Economic or Applied Economic Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
Although an increasing number of organizations are paying attention to sustainability, the successful implementation of sustainability policies remains a significant challenge. It is essential that teams and employees within the organization support and contribute to the implementation of these policies. The aim of this doctoral research is to gain insight into how consensus can be fostered regarding the (importance of) sustainability goals across different hierarchical levels within an organization, and how this consensus can enhance both the implementation and the positive impact of sustainability policies.

Tumor models include the use of three-dimensional cell aggregates (also named spheroids) (Peirsman&Blondeel et al. Nature Methods 2021), patient-derived tumor fragments (Vermeulen et al. Sci Rep 2024) and patient-derived orthotopic xenograft mouse models (Fischer et al. Clin Trans Med 2023). Patient-derived models are obtained from surplus tissues in full collaboration with our clinical partners.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in political science
Summary of PhD Program:
Democracies depend on the premise that all citizens, even losers (i.e., those who did not obtain the desired outcome in a decision-making process), comply with the law and retain a certain level of support for the political system and its procedures. In established democracies with high levels of electoral integrity, such as Belgium, obtaining losers’ consent in the context of elections has not been challenging so far.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a motivated and talented PhD student to delve into the field of thermal energy, specifically high-temperature industrial heat pumps. Heat pumps are widely recognized as a key technology for sustainable heat supply. Nevertheless, many aspects still need to be explored in order to fully unlock their potential. Only recently has attention shifted towards high-temperature (>100°C) industrial heat pumps for process heat applications. Within the framework of several national research projects (UPheat-INES 1.0 & 2.0, RethinkEnergy4Food) and international collaborations (IEA Annex 57), the research group has built up extensive expertise in this area. Through this PhD position, we aim to further expand and strengthen our research position.

Summary of PhD Program:
Mineralization of soft tissues such as skin or blood vessels leads to destruction of the affected tissue and hence important morbidity and mortality. It is a feature in common disorders such as chronic kidney disease, atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus. A more extreme presentation of soft tissue mineralization can be seen in genetic disorders, of which pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is considered a hallmark disease.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Political Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
Understanding politicians’ ideological positions is a crucial element in a representative democracy. Inaccurate estimations of these positions can have detrimental consequences, e.g. incorrect voting, lowering political trust and exacerbating affective polarisation. Citizens lack, however, time and energy to thoroughly analyze all politicians. As a result, they rely on information shortcuts (or cues) when assessing ideological positions of politicians. Due to processes such as partisan decline, personalisation and increased intra-party competition, individual cues have become more important as information shortcut.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
To this end, we will perform cutting-edge proteomics analyses on post-mortem human retinal tissues and use bioinformatics and deep learning tools to integrate it with complementary omics datasets to identify novel translation-regulatory elements and proteoforms. Next, a selection of these elements will be functionally validated through cellular, functional and activity assays. Novel translation-regulatory elements and proteoforms will then be investigated on the presence of potential causal variants in both in-house and international patient cohorts (e.g. through access of the Genomics England genomes).

We are currently working on two-phase expansion for power generation in an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). The goal is to model this complex process using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), taking into account thermodynamic non-equilibrium. The developed method can then serve as the foundation for a new generation of ORC systems with improved efficiency. These cycles are particularly well-suited for converting waste heat into usable energy, thereby contributing to the renewable energy transition.

Summary of PhD Program:
Imagine a world in which production companies do not have to worry about their energy supply. Not just because they have their own renewable energy sources (e.g., solar panels, wind turbines) and energy storage (e.g., industrial batteries), but more importantly because their entire production system has been designed and is managed to optimally use the available electrical and thermal energy. In essence, focus has shifted from optimizing production goals and subsequently determining where and how to get energy from, to optimizing production and energy goals together.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates to perform research on a closed-loop and non-invasive ultrasound neuromodulation treatment of focal epilepsy. The candidate will perform fiber photometry imaging and focused ultrasound insonication experiments in epileptic mice, to explore the potential for cell-type selective neuromodulation. The non-invasive neurorecording technique, realized through acousto-electric heterodyning, will be validated with depth and EEG electrode measurements. Finally, the closed-loop ultrasound technology will be tested in the intrahippocampal kainic acid mouse model in this Ph.D. project.
