1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Large Language Model for Intelligent System Software
Summary of PhD Program:
Large Language Models (LLMs) have profoundly transformed the way we study, work, and think. Models such as ChatGPT have the potential to free individuals from the intricate and labour-intensive processes involved in writing and coding. Developing system software, such as compilers, is an exceedingly complex task that often requires investments of hundreds of millions of dollars. This project aims to explore the extent to which LLMs can be harnessed to assist in the development of system software.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding the Micelle Architecture of Mild to Harsh Surfactant Blends
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to investigate the structure-function relationships of commonly used surfactants in wash-off skin care formulations. These are typically tested by measuring the ability to solubilize various biological components and to some extent the behaviour can be related to the size and charge of the surfactant micelles, as well as the critical micelle concentration. However, for mixtures of classic and novel surfactants these relationships are sometimes far from clear and a more thorough analysis of micelle nanostructure is needed.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating porosity changes and stress mechanics of corroding nuclear wastes under confined expansion
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will work alongside leading teams within the University of Leeds and Sellafield Ltd, to investigate the nature of waste evolution under storage conditions in order to predict volume changes and resulting forces generated on confinement packaging. Specifically, under interim storage, Magnox alloy undergoes a series of physical and chemical changes; such as corrosion reactions forming brucite, as well as with CO2 to form hydromagnesite and other magnesium hydroxycarbonate phases as a soil/clay like sediment bed, which will gradually dry-out over long timescales.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Numerical Modelling of Hydrogen Explosions in semi-Confined Spaces
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to develop the current methods for assessing the consequences of explosions. This may include whether hydrogen deflagration to detonation transient (DDT) can be ruled out, and subsequently what local pressures would be seen if DDT does or doesn’t occur. The outcomes of the proposed project may provide significant improvements to safety case development for nuclear decommissioning and beyond. This project will lead to a start-of-the-art CFD tool for investigating hydrogen explosion safety within nuclear facilities. It may also generate new simplified hand calculation methods for estimating localised overpressures.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical injection of THz spin excitations in topological solid state devices
Summary of PhD Program:
To support the future growth of the digital economy, we must explore computing paradigms that overcome the inherent limitations of semiconductors. A proposed way to do this is to use the spin of electrons to carry information: a field known as spintronics. This technology promises to provide a route to low power, high speed computers of the future. An emerging area within spintronics is Terahertz spintronics, where interactions between electrons at trillionths of a second are used. This is 1000 times faster than the current state of the art in silicon.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Stress modulated antiferromagnetism in a BiFeO3-based thin film
Summary of PhD Program:
In the challenge to develop new, high density logic and memory devices, the concept of employing electron spin transport as the data vector (i.e. spintronics) is of great interest due to the potential for very low energy consumption devices. Antiferromagnetic materials play a pivotal role in many current and envisioned spintronic devices through the phenomenon of magnetic exchange bias at the interface between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet. This phenomenon allows such heterostuctures to act as spin-valves to control the conduction of electrons according to their spin. The ability to modulate the exchange bias, for example by switching the antiferromagnetism on and off, would be a valuable concept in spintronic device design.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data-parallel data structures
Summary of PhD Program:
As a result of increased core count both on Intel Xeon Phi and nVidia Tesla platforms, global interest in SMP (shared memory parallelism) and SIMD (single instruction multiple data) computations has rekindled. For complex computations, however, development of data structures and algorithms has lagged behind serial methods. The goal of this PhD is therefore to build systematically towards data structures, tools and libraries that effectively exploit the massive parallelism now available.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Water-accelerated Reaction Discovery In Silico
Summary of PhD Program:
On water reactions are a class of organic reaction which can be performed in aqueous media. The organic compounds do not dissolve in water, but form droplet. These reactions are typically accelerated up to hundred of times compared to reactions in organic solvents. Thus, on water processes epitomise green chemistry, avoiding the need for hazardous organic solvents while delivering enhanced productivity and simple purification of the products. However, the range of known on water reactions is limited, which hinders their wider application in sustainable industrial processes.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spectral geometry
Summary of PhD Program:
Spectral geometry lies at the intersection of differential geometry, partial differential equations, and analysis. To a large extent it is motivated by questions originating in the study of real-life phenomena, such as vibration, heat propagation, oscillation of fluids, and quantum mechanical effects. For example a model question, posed by Mark Kac half a century ago is, Can one hear the shape of a drum? The challenge is to understand the geometry of an idealized drum from the set of its vibration frequencies, that is the Laplace eigenvalues. The question Kac poses is closely linked to other topics in spectral geometry, including shape optimization, spectral asymptotics, and spectral invariants.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimisation Algorithms for Distributed Computing
Summary of PhD Program:
Optimisation algorithms for task offloading in Edge computing should perform decision making for a combined, Edge-Cloud system. In a typical scenario, users submit tasks to Edge servers. Some tasks can be processed by the Edge, which capacity is limited, and the results are then returned back to users. Remaining tasks are moved to the Cloud, with abundant capacity and typically with faster servers, but there are additional costs and time incurred by data transfer. Thus, a number of a challenging optimsation problems arise aimed at finding solutions which minimise task completion times, computation and data transfer costs, and maximise the system throughput rate.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogen Energy Application and Safety Consideration
Summary of PhD Program:
Hydrogen gas has the potential to play a key role in the future of green energy. Carbon-free energy is essentially required to reduce the greenhouse gases (GHG). These emissions are the main reason for the climate change. Therefore, employing hydrogen in domestic and industrial purposes is one of the crucial challenges today for decarbonisation. There are many hydrogen and hybrid projects to reduce or eliminate CO2 gases. In addition, there is no difficulties in igniting hydrogen as it also burns with wide range of mixtures compared to other fuels.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Strain control of ferrimagnets
Summary of PhD Program:
Magnetic random access memory (MRAM) using electrical current to switch magnetic layers has been on the market for a few years. It has the potential to replace much of the memory hierarchy in computer architectures but the device footprint and energy consumption are still too large to be competitive. To address the latter, there are several ongoing investigations into the use of electric field to manipulate nanomagnets, either by directly applying a gate voltage or indirectly via piezoelectric strain.
