1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Water-accelerated Reaction Discovery In Silico
Summary of PhD Program:
On water reactions are a class of organic reaction which can be performed in aqueous media. The organic compounds do not dissolve in water, but form droplet. These reactions are typically accelerated up to hundred of times compared to reactions in organic solvents. Thus, on water processes epitomise green chemistry, avoiding the need for hazardous organic solvents while delivering enhanced productivity and simple purification of the products. However, the range of known on water reactions is limited, which hinders their wider application in sustainable industrial processes.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimisation Algorithms for Distributed Computing
Summary of PhD Program:
Optimisation algorithms for task offloading in Edge computing should perform decision making for a combined, Edge-Cloud system. In a typical scenario, users submit tasks to Edge servers. Some tasks can be processed by the Edge, which capacity is limited, and the results are then returned back to users. Remaining tasks are moved to the Cloud, with abundant capacity and typically with faster servers, but there are additional costs and time incurred by data transfer.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydrogen Energy Application and Safety Consideration
Summary of PhD Program:
Hydrogen gas has the potential to play a key role in the future of green energy. Carbon-free energy is essentially required to reduce the greenhouse gases (GHG). These emissions are the main reason for the climate change. Therefore, employing hydrogen in domestic and industrial purposes is one of the crucial challenges today for decarbonisation. There are many hydrogen and hybrid projects to reduce or eliminate CO2 gases. In addition, there is no difficulties in igniting hydrogen as it also burns with wide range of mixtures compared to other fuels. Consequently, hydrogen is gradually becoming a leading fuel for transport, domestic, and industrial applications.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Strain control of ferrimagnets
Summary of PhD Program:
Magnetic random access memory (MRAM) using electrical current to switch magnetic layers has been on the market for a few years. It has the potential to replace much of the memory hierarchy in computer architectures but the device footprint and energy consumption are still too large to be competitive. To address the latter, there are several ongoing investigations into the use of electric field to manipulate nanomagnets, either by directly applying a gate voltage or indirectly via piezoelectric strain.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in All Natural Composites
Summary of PhD Program:
All polymer composites is a growing area of research and development in which the Leeds Soft Matter Physics group has been one of the foremost pioneers. Research to date, on melt processable polymer systems, has led to a number of major patents and via a University spin-off company, to commercial applications. In the view of replacing synthetic polymers by renewable matter, all-natural based composites have great potential. In this project we shall manufacture and study all-natural composites using green processing routes. Selective surface solvation of the biopolymer fibres via an ionic liquid will be used.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum Key Distribution
Summary of PhD Program:
One of the biggest likely threats to cryptography is the current rapid progress in quantum computing. One of the most likely candidates to meet this threat is quantum key distribution, however this potentially leads to an enormous cost in creating the necessary infrastructure. At the University of Leeds we have been developing an alternative approach that makes use of existing infrastructure of microwave links such as WiFi channels to perform key exchange. The aim of this project would be to establish an encrypted wireless network using these techniques.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multimodal Large Language Models and Data Fusion for Driver Monitoring in Automated Vehicles
Summary of PhD Program:
As automated vehicles (AVs) become increasingly integrated into real-world transport systems, robust driver monitoring systems (DMS) are essential, particularly during control transitions between vehicle autonomy and manual driving (also known as take-over requests or TORs). Accurate, real-time interpretation of multimodal signals (e.g. vision, audio, physiological data) is critical to assessing driver readiness and engagement.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Long distance travel and its carbon implication using data fusion and modelling
Summary of PhD Program:
Our recent research (Nature Energy) suggests that long distance travel (trips longer than 50 miles one way) in the UK is responsible for less than 3% of all passenger trips, but cover 60% of the miles travelled and 70% of the emissions from passenger travel. However, it is very difficult to have a comprehensive understanding of long distance travel – especially in the context of overall passenger travel – given existing detailed travel surveys do not cover infrequent long distance travel and more frequent daily or weekly travel patterns together.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in e-cargo bikes in rural areas for decarbonisation and equitable transition
Summary of PhD Program:
Rural e-micro mobility and Active Travel are under studied. (Brand 2021 https://doi.org/10.16997/ats.1036 , Bobcic 2024 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jclepro.2024.144346 Philips et al 2024 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jtrangeo.2024.103813). The need for more research on e-bikes / e-cargo bikes in rural areas was a key finding on future research areas from the Mobility Theme of the CREDS EPSRC funded research centre (EP/R035288/1). Existing decision-making tools for planning active travel infrastructure are overly focussed on urban areas and are unsuited to rural applications [Emma Moody Lake District National Park Authority pers. Comm 2024].

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding and Enhancing Pedestrian-Automated Vehicle Interactions in Complex Traffic Scenarios
Summary of PhD Program:
Interaction is defined as ‘A situation where the behaviour of at least two road users can be interpreted as being influenced by a space-sharing conflict between the road users.’ (Markkula et al., 2020). In our current and every day road users’ interactions, there are a number of kinematics factors that are important in resolving interactions (e.g., short-stop behaviours, priority assertion, lateral deviations) (Markkula et al., 2023; Yang et al., 2024). Interactions can also be resolved by explicit communication (i.e., hand waves, flashing headlights, or honking), although to a much lesser extent (Lee et al., 2020).
Application Deadline: 13 June 2025
14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Spatial interaction modelling for future transport demand simulation
Summary of PhD Program:
The UK government is committed to delivering a net zero economy by 2050 (Hutton et al. 2024). Transport is now the most polluting sector and has made the least progress in reducing emissions. A significant barrier to implementing effective policies to enable fast and fair transport decarbonisation is the lack of models that provide the flexibility, detail, power and agility needed to simulate future transport demand, modal shift, and technology adoption in a nationally scalable and integrated framework.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Worthwhile use of time while travelling: effects on daily travel and activity schedules
Summary of PhD Program:
People’s travel decisions, such as whether to drive or use public transport, as affected by many different factors. Influencing such factors has been a key objective for policymakers to foster behaviour change towards more environmentally sustainable travel patterns. While key determinants are believed to be the cost and duration of the journey, others have recently received attention, including the ability to make use of the time spent travelling, either productively or for enjoyment.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding preferences and modelling ‘difficult’ choices through virtual reality experiences
Summary of PhD Program:
Many of the activity and travel choices we make involve no right or wrong decisions and the trade-off between the attributes of possible alternatives is very context and person-dependent. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, significant differences were observed around the world and among different ethnic groups in terms of risk-taking propensity which in turn affected the shift in activity and travel patterns throughout this year (Dryhurst et al. 2020). There have also been country-level variations observed in what is the `right’ decision in the so-called `moral machine’ choice setting, where an individual must choose whom to save if an autonomous vehicle (AVs) hypothetically were to crash (Awad et al. 2020).

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Promoting Healthy Ageing through Diverse Mobility Options
Summary of PhD Program:
With an ageing population throughout the UK, and increased life expectancies, it is crucial to understand and address the transportation needs of older people to ensure sustained mobility and promote healthy, active lives. Today many older people are healthier, and more mobile than previous generations, leading to higher demand for travel, particularly for family, social and leisure purposes. For those who do face poor health, enabling mobility can be critical for sustaining welfare. These factors necessitate an examination of the transportation system to ensure that it is inclusive, equitable, and capable of meeting the diverse needs of an older population.
