8. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology specializing in evolutionary biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Chromosomal inversions can shield adaptive combinations of alleles from recombination, facilitating evolutionary processes such as adaptation, sex chromosome evolution and speciation. However, inversions are not just passive vessels, inversions themselves evolve as they contain large swaths of the genome and may encompass many hundreds of genes. Critically, their large size (compared to smaller changes such as point mutations) means that their allelic content as well as their frequency evolves over time, something which is currently not well incorporated in evolutionary theory.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Radiation biology and cancer

Summary of PhD Program:

The thyroid gland is a relatively radiosensitive organ important to protect from ionizing radiation, and especially after exposure to radioiodine. The mechanisms behind radiobiological effects are still little known. Current molecular methods are very useful for mechanistic studies on cells and tissues. Our initial studies show that irradiation of the thyroid gland cause systemic effects on other organs and tissues. These types of effects are also relatively unknown and are important to understand when it comes to protecting individuals in connection with, for example, radiation in healthcare or in connection with nuclear accidents.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational mathematics

Summary of PhD Program:

We will recruit one doctoral student in computational mathematics to work under the supervision of Axel Målqvist in the project “Multilevel methods for spatial network models” funded by the Swedish Research Council. Spatial networks are used in various application fields including simulation of fibre based and porous materials. The main computational challenge comes from multiscale data variation and a complex underlying geometric structure. Efficient multilevel methods use multiple scales of representation of the network. In order to prove convergence it is crucial that the levels of representation approximate the full network sufficiently well, which in turn puts restrictions on the homogeniety and connectivity of the network.
