1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Area of Edge Intelligence for Dynamic Digital Twins
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Electronic systems (IES) is looking for a Ph.D. candidate in the area of dynamically updated digital twins for a sustainable and carbon-neutral mobility future. A digital twin is defined as a virtual representation of a physical asset or process enabled through data and simulations for real-time prediction, optimization, monitoring, control, and improved decision making. For real-time operation, the twin requires continuous updating with new measurements from its observation platforms. However, different sensors produce significantly different amounts of data, with different time-criticality and importance for the twin.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in sediment-large element interaction
Summary of PhD Program:
In this specific PhD project, the interaction of larger sized elements with the sediment particles (such as rocks used for coastal and river bank protection) will be described using the discrete element method (DEM) including collision physics, incorporating element contact, the direction of forcing due to collision, and the orientation of the involved elements. Together with the underlying high-resolution and turbulence resolving flow solver as well as the particle-based sediment transport, the large elements will be connected to the hydrodynamics model through direct forcing.
Application Deadline: 20th August 2023
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in particle resolving soil-sediment interaction
Summary of PhD Program:
In this specific PhD project, the sediment dynamics are approached from a soil mechanical viewpoint where the influence of the hydrodynamic loading and erosion on the soil continuum, the slope stability and the stresses in the soil continuum are studied. The general idea of the particle-in-cell methods is followed to discretize the soil continuum using Lagrangian points and a Cartesian background mesh. The soil model will consider strain-rate effects to capture the slope failure and slide mechanism encountered in scour holes due to excessive sediment erosion. Together with the underlying high-resolution and turbulence-resolving flow solver as well as the particle-based sediment transport, this will take a step towards a more realistic representation soil-sediment interaction processes.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Predictive Digital Twin for Offshore Wind Energy
Summary of PhD Program:
The Norwegian government is presenting a major initiative in 2023 to promote offshore wind power. The plan is to install 1,500 offshore turbines that will produce a total of 30GW energy by 2040. Even though considered as a promising sustainable energy source, wind power is highly intermittent and non-dispatchable because it is a variable power source. Digital twin is an enabling technology to accurately forecast energy production from a wind farm by providing a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the behaviour of the wind farm and its components under different weather conditions and operational scenarios. The aim of the research is to leverage digital twin technology for offshore wind farms to enable accurate wind energy forecast through modelling, simulation, and optimization of wind farms’ behavior under uncertain weather conditions and operational scenarios.

27. Fully Funded PhD Position in Semantics-aware Exploration
Summary of PhD Program:
Robotic inspection of large-scale marine vessels, such as tanker ships or floating production systems necessitates efficient behaviours that are attuned to the specific information that certain structures of the facility offer for the assessment of its overall health. However, existing autonomy methods fail to incorporate the specific information associated with certain “semantics” in the environment (e.g., structures in the context of marine vessel inspection). Therefore, the state-of-the-art in tasks such as exploration or inspection treats the environment in a unified way without explicit focus on the areas that truly matter from the perspective of top-down motivations (e.g., for an inspection mission).
Application Deadline: 1st September 2023
28. Fully Funded PhD Position in Redefining Multi-Robot Search And Rescue Autonomy
Summary of PhD Program:
Search And Rescue (SAR) has long represented a core challenge and opportunity for robotics. Despite the efforts, however, robots are rarely and sparsely used in real-life SAR operations. Beyond logistical aspects or issues of social acceptance the fact is that SAR tasks are extremely demanding, time-critical and often take place in particularly harsh environments. Building upon our experiences from the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, and within the scope of a new soon-to-start European project on Search and Rescue, this PhD position calls to redefine how diverse multi-robot teams undertake SAR missions autonomously. Focusing on the collaboration of legged and flying robots, in this research we seek to equip such robots with semantic reasoning, enhanced multi-modal perception and the planning & decision-making autonomy that shall render robots “mission-complete” for real-life complex SAR missions. Alongside algorithmic contributions, there is a major element of field deployments within the scope of this position.
