1. Fully Funded PhD Position in environmental and resource assessment of ocean mining

Summary of PhD Program:

The demand for battery materials is expected to increase notably in Sweden and Europe. The question is from where these critical materials can be obtained. An alternative source of resources is ocean mining in European waters. In this project, we will compare the environmental and resource impacts of ocean mining to land-based mining. We will do this using prospective life cycle assessment, where impacts on climate, biodiversity and other impact categories are evaluated from the cradle of extraction to the battery’s grave.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine-learning enhanced modeling of complex cracks

Summary of PhD Program:

The steel-on-steel contact between railway wheels and rails results in extremely low rolling resistance, but the high contact stresses lead to large plastic deformations and complex crack networks. Currently, it is not possible to simulate these complex crack networks in rails and wheels. In this project, we aim to solve this challenge by using machine learning-enhanced modeling techniques, combined with state-of-the-art computational mechanics methods. This will make it possible to evaluate the influence of these complex crack networks on the rolling contact loading and ultimately the risk of rail and wheel failure.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data-Driven Sustainable Mobility

Summary of PhD Program:

The transport sector accounts for approximately a quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Traffic congestion and safety issues are significant contributors to economic losses and accidents worldwide. To accelerate the transition to emission-free, more efficient, and safer transportation systems, the world has seen remarkable advancements in emerging transport technologies such as electric and intelligent transport systems, as well as shared mobility solutions. These innovations offer promising avenues to revolutionize current mobility systems and contribute significantly to the development of sustainable mobility.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in mathematics: Spectral theory of differential equations

Summary of PhD Program:

The position is in the field of spectral theory of differential operators, where the properties of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are studied in relation to the attributes of the operator. This involves a combination of techniques from mathematical analysis (including partial differential equations, calculus of variations, and Fourier analysis) but can also connect to other fields in mathematics, such as geometry and probability theory. Specific topics can include the dependence of the spectrum on the underlying geometry and coefficients of the operator, or the study of operators that are, in some sense, extremal.
