7. PhD Programs in Cell Growth Control in Health and Age-related Disease

Summary of PhD Positions:

The aim of the research group “Cell Growth Control in Health and Age-related Disease” is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of cell growth control, nutrient sensing, and secretion of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins; and to identify and functionally characterize novel regulators of these processes, focusing on their putative implementation as new targets for drug development. Our work combines high-throughput omics approaches (functional genomic screens, proteomic analyses, metabolomics), with elegant molecular biology, biochemistry and high-resolution microscopy techniques. We make use of established human and mouse cell lines, as well as primary patient-derived cells, to address multiple fundamental questions: How is cell growth regulated in normal cells?

8. PhD Programs in Role of Endothelial Factors in Cardiac Regeneration Mechanisms in Zebrafish

Summary of PhD Positions:

The adult human/mammalian hearts have a limited capacity for repair following injury while zebrafish exhibit a robust cardiac renewal capacity and the ability to completely regenerate their heart, post injury or amputation. Therefore, mechanistic and functional insights derived from the regenerative-repair-based mechanisms of zebrafish are ideal to uncover pro-regenerative mechanisms that could boost cardiac repair in humans. The endocardial tissue, though speculated to participate in efficient restoration of lost cardiomyocytes and functional myocardium, still remains underexplored for its precise mechanisms and functions during cardiac regeneration.
