1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geology/ Geophysics
Summary of PhD Program:
The goal of this project is to build fragmented tectonic plate models for the margins of the northeastern North Atlantic and use them in deformable plate reconstructions. These models will better capture inherited structures and internal deformation – within and along each rift, margin segment and microcontinent – and will be used to generate more realistic crustal reconstructions that can be compared against present-day constraints. The PhD candidate will have to work with seismic reflection interpretation, potential field modelling incl. gravity inversion, and plate reconstructions.
Application Deadline: 1st July 2024

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Thermodynamics of ammonia-water mixtures
Summary of PhD Program:
For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The period of employment of this position is 3 years, with possible extension due to teaching. The position will be in the Thermodynamics group at the Department of Chemistry at NTNU. Ammonia (NH3) is deemed by many to be a promising energy carrier to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transport and a viable solution for global H2 transport. A challenge is the consequences of possible spills of liquid ammonia into water when it is transported on ships. Ammonia is often transported at a temperature well below the freezing point of water. A spill of ammonia in water will therefore rapidly evaporate. It will also react with water through a highly exothermic reaction. The interfacial dynamics and the thermo-physical properties will play a key role in how fast the ammonia spreads in both water and air, and where it ends up.
Application Deadline: 2nd June 2024

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Trustworthy AI
Summary of PhD Program:
The adoption of AI has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, with AI systems and components now integrated into numerous critical tasks. As a result, trusting AI workflows has emerged as a vital prerequisite for the widespread acceptance of recent technological advancements in this domain. The operational paradigm of AI systems has evolved from centralized to fully distributed, with ownership of training data, model training, and model usage often attributed to disparate actors without established trust between them. This decentralization introduces vulnerabilities, as adversarial machine learning techniques can pose significant threats to the accuracy of AI systems, the integrity of associated data, and the privacy of entities involved in the training or inference phases.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Digital twin evolution in maritime life cycle
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD position will focus on novel approaches for generating test cases to evaluate the twin system, identifying and diagnosing twin system failures, e.g., failure of onboard support tools, and implementing mechanisms for automated debug and model update. 15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Circumventing avian collision risk, an aerodynamic approach
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD position is part of the WP5 Sustainable wind development and related to avian collision risks which is one of the main environmental impacts of onshore and offshore wind turbines on birds. In an offshore setting, many seabird populations are in sharp decline due to climate change and anthropogenic marine activities. There exists yet little knowledge on the extent of collision mortality internationally, due to the difficulty in recording such collision events offshore. Also, existing collision risk models are simplistic in nature and heavily rely on accurate knowledge of avoidance. The PhD will develop an aerodynamic bird collision avoidance model, combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the flow around wind turbines with the aerodynamic characteristics of flying birds to predict collision risk.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Demonstration of safety and reliability of novel control technologies
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD position is a part of the research center SUBPRO-Zero (SUstainable Bridge PROgram towards Zero emissions), that has the mission to conduct fundamental and applied research to contribute to net-zero emissions in the offshore industry. Industrial partners include Equinor, Aker BP, TotalEnergies, Vår Energi, Petrobras, Aker Solutions, Kongsberg Digital and Siemens Energy.
The transition period into climate neutral zero emission energy production involves oil and gas production, as a supplementary energy source and as an input to e.g., blue hydrogen production. As the access to develop new oil and gas fields may decline over the coming years, it is even more important to recover as much as possible from the existing developed fields. Here, sea water treatment and injection systems play an important role to enhance the recovery factor of existing fields.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in Safety analysis Framework for Autonomously Operated Zero-Emission Marine Vessels
Summary of PhD Program:
The maritime industry is changing fast with two big innovations: self-navigating (autonomous) ships and ships that don’t pollute (zero-emission), using clean fuels like hydrogen and ammonia. However, mixing these technologies is tricky. Autonomous ships use complex computer systems to make decisions without human operator, and zero-emission ships use fuels that can be risky if not handled properly. Currently, we have a large number of studies to analyse the safety of either type on its own, but lack of a good way to evaluate both at the same time.
We need a new approach to make sure ships that are both autonomous and zero-emission are safe. This is important because these ships could make shipping cheaper, safer, and cleaner for the environment. We are looking for you who wants to develope a new way to analyse the safety of these advanced future ships, covering both the smart tech they use and the clean fuels they run on. It’s a big step towards making sure the future of shipping is both safe and green.

This project aims to use both experimental and computational techniques to understand the favorable operation window for gas fermentation processes. This project is in collaboration with an industrial partner who is developing a proprietary gas fermentation process to convert waste CO2 emissions into chemicals. The novel gas fermentation process by the SFI-IB industrial partner is a relevant case in this PhD project.
