10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electricity market optimization
Summary of PhD Program:
European states (and Sweden) are working toward a sustainable intermittent renewable future. This green vision has brought about several important challenges. One of the major challenges is the increasing complexity in the Day-Ahead Electricity Market (DAM) model. First, the Market Time Unit (MTU) is planned to be reduced from 1 hour to 15 minutes. This roughly means an optimization model four times larger than what we have now. Second, the type and number of nonconvex orders are expected to increase by growing share of intermittent renewable generation. This in turn creates increasing complexity in calculating uniform prices. Third, Joint optimization of energy and balancing reserves in the day-ahead market which requires innovate algorithms to solve the DAM model.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Applied Math within Optimization and Systems Theory
Summary of PhD Program:
We focus on developing optimization algorithms, methods, and fundamental theory, for analyzing specific input-output properties of deep neural networks (DNNs) and training DNNs with guaranteed properties. The ability to rigorously analyze and train DNNs with guaranteed properties is essential for us to trust AI-based systems, and this is an active research area. The goal is to develop deterministic optimization methods and we will build upon, and further develop, theory and concepts from mixed-integer and global optimization. A central question in the project is ”how to construct strong polyhedral representations and relaxations of DNNs”. A strong interest in mathematical programming (e.g., mixed-integer optimization) is a great advantage.

24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hybrid Energy Storage
Summary of PhD Program:
To combat climate change, the power grid is evolving and many countries around the world are increasing their utilization of energy storage systems. Energy storage systems can, at various levels of the power grid, provide different services directly to the user but also to the grid itself. However, not all types of storage systems are equally suitable in all situations, e.g., an inherently large power capability is not naturally coupled with a high energy capacity and vice versa. The approach of combining different types of storage systems is called hybrid energy storage system (HESS). This allows for more flexibility and opportunities but can, e.g., increase losses if not properly handled.
