5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Role of long non-coding RNAs in Zika virus-induced neuropathogenesis
Summary of PhD Program:

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) account for approximately 30% of human genes, and 40% are specifically expressed in the brain. 8. Fully Funded PhD Position in RNA Stability in Mammalian Development
Summary of PhD Program:
Early mammalian development is underpinned by a series of cell state transitions as multiple lineages form with distinct transcriptional programmes. There is accumulating evidence that post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms play a key role in these developmental transitions. Currently this is an understudied facet of developmental biology, but several publications have reported embryonic lethality with an embryonic or placental phenotype in mice where an RNA binding protein or decay factor has been knocked out. However, detailed phenotyping and in-depth molecular analysis is lacking in most of these examples.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join the project. 12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating RNA structural switches in the HIV-1 lifecycle: implications for viral replication and drug discovery
Summary of PhD Program:

HIV-1 has a compact genome containing multiple, often overlapping, RNA structures that it uses to control its lifecycle. Malaria, caused by Plasmodium parasites and transmitted by female Anopheles mosquitoes, remains a devastating infectious disease. The most promising lifecycle stages to target with TBVs is the parasitic ookinete, a motile zygote that is essential for transmission.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Angstrom AI – Probabilistic Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
We aim to answer questions such as what is the probability that a drug molecule binds a target protein? The molecule equilibrium probability is given by the well-known Boltzmann distribution. Existing methods based on molecular dynamics struggle to generate accurate and independent samples from Boltzmann distributions, especially in high dimensions. We will address this by using advances in deep learning and generative modelling. We will collaborate with the startup Angstrom AI.

The aim of the project is to explore the known anatomy and physiology of the brain to find matches to the functional structures required to implement various algorithms, such as reinforcement learning. Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to develop a new, spectral framework to analyse and understand wall turbulence, by quantifying how turbulent eddies of different lengthscales interact with each other through the non-linear, advective term in the momentum equations. The idea is then to use this framework to map inter-scale causality, characterising the turbulent cascade, and to identify the essential paths in these maps, with applications to reduced-order modelling and flow control. The project will also aim to use these maps to understand how the dynamics of the turbulent cascade and turbulent dissipation are altered in flows over complex and textured surfaces, compared to those over smooth walls.
