1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics of Life

Summary of PhD Program:

The project focuses on quantitative understanding of the viruses infecting bacteria (bacteriophages). Our goal is to achieve a universal understanding of interaction between viruses and their hosts. Phages are key drivers of microbial ecology, gene transfer and microbial evolution. They serve an ideal in-vivo model system to study virus-host interactions. We aim to explore virus development upon infection as a dynamic and stochastic process exhibiting decision-making behaviours. We also study the role of phages at various scales, from population to ecological levels to investigate epidemics as it spread in 2 or 3-dimensional geometries. Our research integrates theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in deep-sea viral ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

Our project aims to assess the role of phages in elemental cycling in deep-sea sediments with emphasis on prophages and their AMGs, using a combination of bioinformatic and experimental approaches. This will be done by three different approaches: 1) analyse AMGs from lytic and temperate phages and map their associations to environmental conditions using metagenomic data. 2) identifying phage-host systems from metagenomic data for in silico evaluation of the role of AMGs in phage-host interactions. 3) investigating trade-offs of lysogeny for the host by quantifying the metabolic contribution and regulation of prophage-encoded AMGs in benthic element cycling using experimental approaches with phage-host systems in cultivation.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Peatland Biogeochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Peatlands are critical ecosystems for global carbon storage and greenhouse gas dynamics, yet their role in the exchange of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with the atmosphere remains poorly understood. This project aims to fill key knowledge gaps in peatland-atmosphere interactions by investigating (1) the production and consumption processes of volatile carbon, (2) how vegetation mediates VOC exchange between peatlands and the atmosphere, (3) microbial taxa and pathways responsible for VOC transformations, and by (4) incorporating these findings into process-based models to predict peatland carbon dynamics under climate change, and vice versa. The project is hosted by the Center for Volatile Interactions.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

Primary cilia are microtubule-based projections found on the surface of nearly every cell in our body. In the last two decades it has become clear that primary cilia have evolved to be key regulatory hubs of the cells, as they concentrate or segregate components of major cellular signalling pathways. Dysfunctional cilia can lead to nearly 40 severe human genetic syndromes (ciliopathies) with highly heterogeneous, overlapping phenotypes, affecting as many as 1 in 400 people. We now know that humans critically depend on cilia to see, hear, smell, breathe, excrete and reproduce. Such activities require a high degree of regulation and critical feedback to ensure robustness in development and homeostasis of different cells, tissues and organs.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in Plant Biochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a native climate-resilient African crop and is the second most important cereal in Kenya after maize (Zea mays L.). Wild relatives of domesticated Sorghum spp. are known for their inherent production of the highly potent Biological Nitrification Inhibitor (BNI) molecule sorgoleone. Sorgoleone is secreted from specialized root hair cells. It increases the efficiency of nitrogen use and inhibits release of the potent greenhouse gas N2O. However, the BNI potential has been lost in sorghum as in many other globally essential domesticated cereal crops due to the intense breeding efforts within high-input agricultural systems.
