9. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology
Summary of PhD Program:
This doctoral student position is part of European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant funded project INTERSPEC, and will specifically address interactions between plant symbiont ectomycorrhizal and litter decomposing saprotrophic fungi. Although typically inhabiting different layers of forest soils, they have been shown to compete for limiting nutrients (e.g. nitrogen (N)) with great effects on the overall organic matter decomposition rates. The goal of the PhD student will be to determine how varying nutrient conditions in laboratory grown co-cultures affect the outcome of this competition as well as composition and function of secondary metabolomes of the competing partners. In addition to the traditionally used agar plate experiments, microfluidic technology-based soil chips will be used for more detailed microscale investigations.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in biology
Summary of PhD Program:
The thesis project will investigate how secondary metabolite production is triggered in bryophytes under different cultivation conditions and in interaction with other plant species (allelopathic interactions). This will be done by employing axenic cultures of bryophytes in different cultivation systems (agar plates, liquid cultures and immersion type bioreactors). The bryophytes will be subject to different conditions in terms of light, water/nutrient availability and co-occurrence of other plants (bryophytes, vascular plants) in separate series of lab experiments. The results will be evaluated chemically by FTIR (infrared spectroscopy) and genetically by transcriptome analyses.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
The main aim of this project is to identify synthetic counterparts for bio-materials and investigate how we can implement their properties to achieve, e.g., synthetic platelets and synthetic red blood cells (RBCs). These colloids will be used to generate a prototype of synthetic blood. Furthermore, the general understanding of the role of particle deformation on the flow properties of concentrated solutions, will help the understanding of blood diseases connected to the deformation of RBCs and the changes in the blood rheology (sickle cell disease), or to the changes in the blood viscosity due to an excess of RBCs (polycythemia). In general, we will develop protocols able to identify the basic properties on a nanoscopic-scale that synthetic colloids must have to achieve the aimed flow behavior at macroscopic length-scales.
Application Deadline: 12.Jul.2024
14. Fully Funded PhD Position in primary forest research
Summary of PhD Program:
Drought is increasingly impacting Europe’s ecosystems, including Swedish forests. In Sweden, new research has shown that primary forests (also called old-growth and natural forests) fared better during the 2018 drought than managed forests. We do not know enough about what leads to more or less drought resistance in forests, and therefore do not know why primary forests are more drought-resistant than managed forests. Potential factors include the amount of water available in the landscape, the size and depth of tree roots, the age of the trees, biodiversity, and ground vegetation. This project will study Sweden’s most natural primary forests to understand why primary forests have better drought resistance and the implications of this for carbon sequestration and biodiversity.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aerosol Technology with Focus on Non Exhaust Transport Emissions from Sustainable Transport Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
Aerosols are mixtures of gases and particles, where the air we breathe is a common example. Exposure to aerosol particles (measured as PM2.5) is today the largest environmental risk factor in Europe. EU has recently decided on sharpened transport emission and air quality legislations which will cause a strong demand for aerosol scientists within industry, society and academia. The transition to electrification and more sustainable fuels will reduce the exposure to tailpipe emissions. This makes non-exhaust emissions (NEE) from brakes, tyres and roads the dominating aerosol emissions from road transport. Particles in NEE may contain metal oxides, microplastics and quartz. However, the characteristics and toxicological properties of NEE from different sources remain poorly known, inhibiting formulating efficient policy.

23. Fully Funded PhD Position in Medical Radiation Physics with a focus on MR-Physics
Summary of PhD Program:
Diffusion MRI (dMRI) measures microscopic properties in the tissue by studying random motion of water molecules. In dense tissue, diffusion is slow, while it appears to be faster in looser tissue. Diffusion MRI can therefore detect cancers that cause the tissue to be abnormally dense. Unfortunately, current dMRI methods have a poor clinical performance. This shortcoming can be remedied by performing a wider range of diffusion encoding, and thereby learning more about the tissue microstructure. For example, we aim to distinguish properties like cell density, cell shape, cell size, blood volume, and cell membrane permeability. Once estimated, these parameters can serve as biomarkers to improve the diagnostics and monitoring of disease.
