This PhD project is a part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship looking to support the sport, health and wellbeing agenda. This opportunity forms a suite of five projects focusing on sports for climate action and nature. It is becoming increasingly accepted that there is a bidirectional relationship between sport and the climate, in that sport both affects and is affected by the climate system. Though research on the varied ways in which climate change impacts sport (and vice-versa) is increasing, in terms of the research on sport-related carbon emissions, this has almost exclusively focused on professional and elite-level sport, ignoring the far more active and populated activities at the grassroots and youth levels (Wilby et al. 2022).

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in System Optimisation using Aerodynamic Inserts
Summary of PhD Program:
Applications are invited for a four-year industry-sponsored CASE PhD studentship, funded by EPSRC and Caterpillar in the Innovation and Research Centre at Loughborough University. The project will develop a novel methodology for designing flow features within ducted flows using a combination of experimental and computation approaches. In order to reduce our impact on the environment including emissions and energy consumption, the efficiency of aerodynamic and fluid systems must be maximised. However, components often see sub-optimal input – or boundary – conditions which can impact their efficiency, effectiveness and lifespan. This project will use initially use fundamental, canonical flows to develop a methodology for designing desired flow structures or removal of flow structures. The researcher will then work together with the project sponsor to apply the methodology to a number of industrial flow systems, in order to improve component and system efficiency.

Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will harness the power of developments in image analysis to solve the real-world challenge of estimating wind hazard. This is an exciting opportunity to apply state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. machine learning) to video clips of moving trees, and conduct corresponding fieldwork to develop new understanding of the natural environment and atmospheric processes at work. At the core of the work will be a campus-scale study, with a variety of CCTV camera data linked to data from the university’s weather station.
