10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Languages and Cultures

Summary of PhD Program:

The OTTOWAQF project investigates how pious endowments shaped state-building in the Ottoman Empire during a critical period between 1450 and 1650. Endowments were the most widespread and powerful social institutions within the empire, yet our current understanding of their role in Ottoman state formation marginalizes their significance. OTTOWAQF seeks to place endowments back squarely within the frame of Ottoman political power by showing how endowments shaped and constrained state-building. We will focus on how sultans and their agents used endowments to advance state objectives, while other social actors, including notable provincial families, Muslim scholars, monastic Christian communities, and endowment functionaries, used them to preserve their wealth and social positions in the empire between 1450 and 1650.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Diatoms are major primary producers in freshwater and marine ecosystems but little remains known about the role of endogenous and external factors triggering life cycle transitions, and in particular how global change affects the growth and life cycling of diatom populations. Recent pioneering work in our lab has revealed the genes involved in life cycle transitions (sexual reproduction, resting spore formation, dormancy,…), suggesting a high degree of conservation in several of them. This makes it possible to monitor the expression of these genes to track the growth and life cycle dynamics of multiple species simultaneously.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research group currently is involved in research projects in the energy domain, including mostly smart grid applications. The focus of our AI4E team in these projects is on data analytics, as well as coordination algorithms for, e.g., demand response. A major objective of the applications we want to support is to accommodate large penetration of renewable sources (wind mills, solar panels, etc.) without requiring excessive investments in the power grid infrastructure. This involves characterizing and eventually predicting both power generation (from renewables) and consumption behavior (and its flexibility, e.g., what portion thereof can be shifted in time), using data analytics techniques, constructing generative models, applying machine learning, etc. The next step is to actively control power consumption, e.g., by developing algorithms for energy management systems (to steer power consumption and/or decide what to use local production for, e.g., push into the grid or local storage).

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Materials, Textiles and Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The research project focusses on the development of a robust multi-scale textile modelling framework, utilizing finite element analysis combined with virtual fibre modelling. Simulations encompass both the manufacturing side (e.g. weaving, stitching, bobbin unwinding, etc.) as well as the performance side (e.g. strength prediction of specialized technical fabric connections). Such simulations are very challenging due to the use of diverse materials (natural and synthetic fibers, yarns and fabrics) combined with high anisotropy and non-linearity. Furthermore, the dynamics of high-speed manufacturing processes need to be included in the modelling framework, ensuring its applicability to real-world processes. This is still a very new research topic and many scientific questions remain unanswered.

24. Fully Funded PhD Position in Civil Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The first objective within the PhD research is to develop a numerical model based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), including the coupled effects of the aero- and hydrodynamic loads and the mooring lines. Hereto, the state-of-the-art SPH solver DualSPHysics will be used, which is able to simulate violent free surface flows, non-linear wave-structure interactions and higher order wave transformations. The DualSPHysics model will coupled to the mooring line solver MoorDyn. Using this numerical model, the FOWT can be accurately modelled in extreme sea states in order to assess the FOWT’s survivability. The aerodynamic load on the FOWT will be added by applying a time-dependent thrust force on the turbine, together with an aerodynamic damper. In order to determine these aerodynamic loads, results from field monitoring tests will be used.
