3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Physics – Theory of topological phenomena

Summary of PhD Program:

The project allows for various directions in theoretical research on topological phenomena within the Quantum and Complex Systems group led by Emil Bergholtz (see www.su.se/english/research/research-groups/quantum-and-complex-systems). A preferred main direction of the PhD opening is strongly correlated states of matter, such as fractional Chern insulators, arising in moiré materials such as twisted bilayer graphene. Both strong analytical skills and ability to perform numerical simulations is valuable. In particular, interest in performing and interpreting exact diagonalization studies is highly desirable. Studies of other directions such as non-Hermitian topology are also possible within the position.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Particle Physics with the ATLAS experiment

Summary of PhD Program:

The ATLAS experiment is the largest detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The data from the experiment is used to explore the smallest constituents of the matter and how these interact with each other. A major discovery was made in 2012 when the long search for the Higgs particle was finally crowned with success. The Higgs particle was the last missing piece of the standard model of particle physics. Despite its experimental success the standard model cannot explain several phenomena (for instance the baryon asymmetry of the universe, dark matter or neutrino masses).

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Cosmology and Astrophysics

Summary of PhD Program:

Nearby dwarf galaxies provide a unique window in these studies and have been on the for-front of dark matter research for a number of reasons: (i) they contain up to 1000 times more dark matter than stars; (ii) their proximity means we can measure their properties in great detail, (iii) the faintest known galaxies are all nearby, around the Milky Way. Moreover, there are debates in the community on whether the standard dark matter model (Cold Dark Matter) can fully explain the properties of these low mass objects, or whether alternative models should be considered.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Geography, Antarctic Ice Sheet mass loss by 2300

Summary of PhD Program:

We seek to recruit a PhD candidate embedded within an international Antarctic consortium project, iQ2300. This project aims to constrain the terrestrial and marine responses of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) margin in Dronning Maud Land, across geological (>1000 yr), historical (100 yr), and recent (<10 yr) timescales, to inform ocean, atmosphere, ice sheet, and sea-level modelling components for improved year 2300 sea level rise estimates for Sweden and worldwide. The PhD project addresses the history of ice-sheet surface and volume changes by dating ice-surface changes on geological timescales using cosmogenic nuclide and luminescence dating techniques and on historical and recent timescales using snow and ice stratigraphies.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography, focus on polar clouds

Summary of PhD Program:

Dramatic sea ice loss over the Arctic and Antarctic triggers climate feedback processes that can both enhance or dampen global warming. Cloud feedbacks – encompassing changes in cloud fraction, altitude, thickness, and phase (liquid or ice) – are among the most uncertain factors. The PhD project’s specific aim is to improve our understanding of cloud feedbacks by studying cloud formation and cloud properties during warm air intrusions and cold air outbreaks in the polar regions. The PhD student will mainly use satellite retrievals and available in-situ data as tools and compare these observations with model simulations conducted by collaborators within the project.
