1. Fully Funded PhD Position in automatic control focusing on computational methods for large scale systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this project is to develop new theory and methods for the control and estimation of large systems, using tools from optimal transport theory. Optimal transport is a mathematically rich theory for comparing probability distributions, and has recently evolved into a powerful tool for applications in control theory and machine learning. Building on these advancements, we will develop new theory and algorithms for optimal transport, targeting applications that may include control of multi-agent systems, inverse problems, and network data analysis.
Application Deadline: 28 March 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Automatic Control focusing on secure control under uncertainty
Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to develop new theories and methods for enhancing the safety and security of control systems in the presence of strategic adversaries and probabilistic uncertainty. Uncertainty can play an interesting dual role in security. The adversary may seek to obfuscate their actions within noise or different sources of uncertainty. The defender can carefully inject uncertainty to obfuscate the system’s vulnerabilities, as in moving-target defense. We seek to further investigate the dual role of uncertainty in the safety and security of control systems.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine learning for computational linear algebra
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project, the doctoral student will explore the potential for accelerating sparse linear algebra with machine learning, specifically graph neural networks. Sparse linear algebra is pivotal in solving large-scale computational problems but requires experts to carefully craft algorithms on a case-by-case basis. Our approach provides an alternative, more accessible, route to highly efficient solvers with the potential to have a major impact throughout science and engineering. The underlying idea is to leverage the inherent graph structure of sparse matrices to create graph neural networks that learn task-adapted algorithms from a dataset of computational problems. Through this integration of machine learning with sparse linear algebra, we hope to unlock unprecedented efficiency and scalability in solving sparse linear systems.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Scientific Computing focusing on numerical simulation of earthquakes
Summary of PhD Program:
The topic of this project is modeling and simulation of earthquakes. All earthquake models contain partially unknown parameters, such as seismic wave speeds and frictional parameters on a fault. Since direct measurements of these parameters remain infeasible, we have to use seismometer data and other indirect measurements to constrain the parameters. This inverse problem is the main focus of the project. In close collaboration with geophysicists at Stanford University, we have recently developed a framework to invert for frictional parameters. The project goals are to extend the framework to different kinds of geophysical data and to implement the new methods in efficient software to facilitate earthquake simulations of with realistic physics and complex fault geometries in 3D.

Summary of PhD Program:
Unlike vascular plants, where several protein substrates have been identified to interact with Phototropin, no such substrates are currently known in the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. The primary objective of this PhD project is to identify the signaling protein partners of Phototropin that mediate blue light perception and connect it to gene expression in C. reinhardtii. Furthermore, the project aims to investigate the structure-function relationship of Phototropin to gain a deeper understanding of its role in photoreception and signal transduction.
