1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding the Micelle Architecture of Mild to Harsh Surfactant Blends
Summary of PhD Program:
This project aims to investigate the structure-function relationships of commonly used surfactants in wash-off skin care formulations. These are typically tested by measuring the ability to solubilize various biological components and to some extent the behaviour can be related to the size and charge of the surfactant micelles, as well as the critical micelle concentration. However, for mixtures of classic and novel surfactants these relationships are sometimes far from clear and a more thorough analysis of micelle nanostructure is needed.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemical Control of Silica Scaling in Geothermal Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
A common method for protecting carbon steel against mineral scaling in aqueous CO2-containing environments (such as geothermal systems) is the continuous injection of scale inhibitors into the process fluid. These inhibitors can function through a number of differing mechanisms in order to reduce the nucleation and/or growth of mineral scales. Towards higher temperatures, the functionality of many scaling inhibitors is lost. Although the development of thermodynamically stable inhibitors is possible, this typically comes at a price of increased toxicity and reduced bio-degradability.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in INFUZE: Evaluating new mobility systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The INFUZE project is exploring what the potential is for moving from systems of individual car based mobility to systems which are more based around mobility on demand. This potentially means changing the way in which people pay for how they travel, how they perceive the options in front of them, and how they blend their choices. There is also the potential for such choices to impact on the quality of their local neighbourhood. In a broader sense, the visions is to imagine a “city where you don’t need to own a car”, which could also include how work is organised, health care and social activities. These kinds of system changes are much harder to evaluate with current appraisal tools.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in INFUZE: Governance of the transition to mobility on-demand
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will map out the different ways in which users experience accessing different forms of mobility and how this relates to how they are governed. It will begin by tracing the various ways in which car ownership is structured and treated through the regulatory and tax system and then in-use in different types of settings. It will seek to understand individual and institutional rights and responsibilities. The work will start with car ownership as 78% of households own a car and the literature is well established that the car has become so ubiquitous in society that it has massively influenced how society is structured (Urry, 2004) and now thinks (Walker et al., 2023) about what is ‘normal’.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in INFUZE: Visualization for evaluating probabilistic and agent-based models of mobility transitions
Summary of PhD Program:
In mobility analysis, visualization is often used informally to explore data under different social and environmental contexts, and from here generate new behavioural understanding. Separately, probabilistic and agent-based models provide a mechanism for simulating behaviours and asking what-if questions, resulting in a very large set of ensemble model outputs. But despite the apparent compatibility of visual and model-based approaches, the extent to which visual analytic designs are coupled with probabilistic and agent-based models is relatively limited.

21. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sustainable delivery of plant nutrients: Selective uptake controlled by wax phase behaviour
Summary of PhD Program:
As global population rises there is a growing challenge in terms of plant healthcare to ensure that key crops do not fail, and that agricultural yields are high. To do this, agrochemicals are used to provide the nutrients for good crop health. To get the nutrients into the crop, the sprayed droplets of nutrients must move through a hydrophobic leaf wax barrier. This wax barrier is needed to retain water in the plant, but it creates an interesting scientific challenge as to how the agrochemicals can penetrate the barrier to deliver the nutrients whilst at the same time ensuring the leaf maintains a viable water content.

22. Fully Funded PhD Position in INFUZE: Household decision-making on car ownership
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will be part of the INFUZE research project, which aims to co-design solutions to allow people to own and use fewer cars without foregoing access to opportunities and leisure. Most of the existing research looks at how many cars people own, how they use them and how this changes over time focused on an individual perspective. Such studies link individual characteristics such as gender, age and events in a person’s life to their car ownership and use and used these factors to predict how it might change in the future. The interdependencies among the activity and travel decisions of the household members in the long, medium or short term (e.g. whether to work or not, own a car or not, who is in charge of a particular errand on a given day, etc.) are largely ignored.
