10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in radiation dose plan optimization using deep learning

Summary of PhD Program:

The overall aim of the project is to develop deep learning methods that can improve, automate and speed up radiotherapy planning and to document the clinical value of such approaches. The proposed project will follow a novel approach of quantifying and optimising plan quality in training of the deep learning model with direct prediction of machine delivery parameters using data from orders of magnitude more patients than prior work in this field. We will investigate if this will lead to improvements over existing clinical procedures and state of the art methods. Artificial intelligence methods need to be tested through prospective evaluations in a real-life clinical scenario. The project is therefore built through both technical aims related to developing the artificial intelligence needed to generate radiotherapy treatment plans and the clinical implementation and testing of such methods in the oncology ward at Rigshospitalet.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Volatile Organic Compound exchange in freshwater ecosystems

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD position will assess VOC exchange in lakes and possibly other freshwater ecosystems. VOC production and consumption rates will be sought linked to environmental conditions and community dynamics in bacterio- and phytoplankton. These may be assessed in situ as well as under controlled conditions in incubation studies. Floating chambers with semi-automated VOC sampling setups will be used to assess VOC exchange at water-air surfaces. VOCs will be measured using proton transfer reaction-time of flight-mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Activity and composition in plankton will be measured by isotope and molecular sequencing techniques. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Prof. Riikka Rinnan and Prof. Lasse Riemann from VOLT.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optomechanical Sensing

Summary of PhD Program:

This fellowship focuses on the application of mechanical sensors for detecting and imaging nano-scale objects, based on the measurement of minute forces and mass. To this end, mechanical devices with ultralow force noise will be designed in collaboration with our international partners, fabricated in our local cleanroom, and characterized in the lab. These sensors will then be deployed for, e.g., detecting the presence and orientation of a single quantum spin, or the shape, mass, and infrared spectrum of an individual protein. The goal of this project is to move from the proof-of-principle of mechanical quantum sensors, to applications that complement existing technologies such as transmission electron microscopy.

Acute stroke is a leading cause of disability and death, affecting over 1 million people per year in Europe alone. Physical activity is the most effective way to reduce the risk of all cardiovascular events, including stroke. However, after menopause, a transition where the risk of severe cardiovascular events increases drastically for women, the effects of physical activity on the vascular system can change. The molecular pathways underlying these important changes are not yet understood.

18. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in critical data studies

Summary of PhD Program:

The two positions form part of a larger project called DataSpace, managed by Professor Klaus Hoeyer. DataSpace proposes a new conceptualization of how the pursuit of health is shaped by data. Healthcare is increasingly datafied and a wide range of actors – patients, clinicians, administrators, policymakers and industry – want to be able to exchange and access health data across national boundaries. Competing initiatives for fostering cross-border data integration proliferate, and the EU provides major investments, e.g. through the European Health Data Space (EHDS). These massive investments will influence healthcare, administration and research, but we do not know how.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Muscle Cell Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

Patients who are critically ill are treated in specialised intensive care units. Because of developments in critical care medicine, most of these patients now survive and are ultimately discharged from hospital. Despite this, patients’ physical function is often markedly impaired for long periods after hospital discharge, affecting their ability to work and deeply impacting healthcare resources. This prolonged loss of physical function has been largely attributed to ‘critical illness myopathy’. The present project aims to define the exact underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of critical illness myopathy. For that, we will perform deep phenotyping of human muscle samples using multiple cell-based assays, X-ray diffraction and proteomics.
