8. PhD Programs in Cardiac Electrophysiology

Summary of PhD Positions:

The research group of PD Dr. Ange Maguy at the Institute of Physiology is offering a PhD position for a period of 3 years and can be extended. The research group focusses on cardiac electrophysiology and therapeutic innovation in atrial fibrillation (AF). As the most common cardiac arrhythmia worldwide, AF is a growing epidemic with a prevalence estimated to rise to 12.1 million in 2030.

It presents a serious health burden due to high morbidity and mortality rate. Despite the extensive research efforts made in the past decades, the determinant trigger for the progression of AF remains poorly understood. In this context, a better mechanistic understanding of the cellular and molecular process forming the substrate of AF is expected to foster the development of safer and more effective treatment approaches.

9. PhD Programs in parasite immunopathology

Summary of PhD Positions:

A PhD student position is available to study the immunoregulatory mechanisms underpinning alveolar echinococcosis (AE), which is caused by Echinococcus multilocularis (small fox tapeworm) and which represents the highest ranking foodborne parasitic zoonosis in Europe. AE is a neglected, but emerging liver disease of humans and other mammals. Current treatment of AE is limited, and the disease causes high medical, psychological and socio-economic burden. The parasite-modulated immune response induced upon E. multilocularis infection is coupled to disease outcome. However, parasite-specific factors responsible for host immunomodulation as well as patho-physiological mechanisms underlying AE are still elusive.

10. PhD Programs in parasite immunopathology

Summary of PhD Positions:

As of Mai/June 2023 or by arrangement, we seeking a PhD student in parasite immunopathology. Our group offers a well-funded research project in a young and dynamic environment, with close collaboration within the well-established team and other members of the Institute of Tissue Medicine and Pathology and the Institute of Parasitology.

The Institute of Parasitology Bern carries out research on parasitic diseases of domestic and farm animals, and of humans, and is involved in teaching and diagnostic services and consulting. In terms of research, we focus on the study of pathogenetic processes that occur during parasitic infections, as well as on the development of new therapeutic approaches. The main topics of interest are zoono-tic helminthiases (echinococcosis, fasciolosis), and abortion-causing protozoans (neosporosis, toxo-plasmosis, tritrichomonosis).

12. PhD Programs in Anaesthesiology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Over the past decade, compelling evidence from studies in laboratory animals and humans has demonstrated developmental neurotoxic effects of general anaesthetics and sedatives. Such study outcomes have raised considerable concerns about administering anaesthetic agents during pregnancy and in early infancy, and significant limitations have arisen in the translation of preclinical observations into clinical practice.

Anaesthesia-induced postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is well described among older patients (>60yrs), but largely unknown in younger ones (<3yrs). It is of critical importance to establish a robust preclinical model that can help identify valid clinical endpoints. Any consequential exposure to neuroactive compounds that alters the normal activity of the nervous system, from low-level sensorimotor to high-level cognitive functions, may compromise, diminish, reverse, or even enhance the neural circuit functionality, and especially its ability to learn.

15. PhD Programs in Stem Cell-based Therapy for Intervertebral Disc Repair

Summary of PhD Positions:

The Bone & Joint Program of the Department for BioMedical Research (DBMR) University of Bern, and the Department for Orthopaedics & Traumatology, Insel University Hospital Bern, Switzerland, seeks a PhD Student in Stem Cell-based Therapy for Intervertebral Disc Repair. The position is for four years, we are starting 1 May 2023. Low back pain (LBP) is a severe pathology, which affects about 80% of western societies.

16. PhD Programs in neurorehabilitation, pediatric oncology

Summary of PhD Positions:

Fortunately, the number of young people who survive cancer is steadily increasing. As a consequence of this positive development, there are more and more survivors, who often suffer from long-term cognitive and motor sequelae. In order to prevent and counteract these long-term consequences, modern, evidence-based interventions at the interface between cognition and sport are urgently needed. In this research project funded by the Swiss Cancer League, we are developing and testing an app to support the cognitive and motor development of young people after cancer.
