3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Constitutive Modelling for Press Forming Simulations

Summary of PhD Program:

Thermoplastic composite materials are considered a prime candidate for the next generation of commercial aircraft. Compared to thermoset composites, these materials offer improved toughness, dustless assembly through welding, and improved recycling opportunities. Press forming is a manufacturing technology for small to medium-sized thermoplastic composite components in high volumes. Process simulation software allows virtual optimization of tool design and material handling in order to achieve first-time-right manufacturing. The predictive quality of these tools relies on accurate constitutive models to describe the material behavior during forming. With the ever increasing need to manufacture more complex components, a step-change is required in the accuracy of these models and the associated material characterization methods.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Capabilities and diversity in ethics of technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of this research project is to develop an approach for ethically assessing the disruptive impact of technologies on individuals. The project centers on two key ideas. The first is that the personal interests of individuals center on not only the protection of rights, but also on support for the development of capabilities. Therefore, we need to develop an ethics of capability development in relation to technology. This approach should consider various impact dimensions of technology on human capabilities – both positive and negative – and should develop approaches for ethically assessing these dimensions. For example, impacts on health, social relations, cognition and learning, self-understanding, work and play, etc.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Reconceiving rights, duties and well-being

Summary of PhD Program:

Are similar conceptual innovations that go beyond individualism needed in the domain of moral philosophy? Is there a need to revise individualist conceptions of moral rights and duties, of the determinants of human wellbeing, and of meaning in life? What is the role of technology in supporting this conceptual change, if various technologies have partially constituted the liberal consumerist ethos? These are the questions to be addressed in this PhD project. Grounded in moral philosophy, this wide-ranging project may involve the examination of alternative value systems that emphasise communitarian values (MacIntye 1981), relational conceptions of wellbeing and sustainability (Pascual et al. 2023), and the value of non-human nature (Taylor 1986).

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in additive manufacturing of heat exchangers

Summary of PhD Program:

One challenge involves designing and manufacturing new materials to create mechanisms with unique functional properties across multiple length scales. A potential solution to address these limitations is employing 3D printing methods, also known as additive manufacturing, to produce 3D architectures based on a digital model. This technology can fabricate structures ranging from micro to macro scales using various materials such as polymer, metal, ceramic, and composites. The advantage lies in the ability to create complex geometries in a single production run, offering operational scalability and design flexibility. Thus, this Ph.D. focuses on exploring the benefits and challenges of additive manufacturing in developing efficient structures for thermochemical materials and heat exchangers for heat transformers.

20. Fully Funded PhD Position in geo artificial intelligence for planetary health

Summary of PhD Program:

Planetary Health, which focuses on the health of human civilization and the natural systems it relies on, underscores the interconnectedness between environmental issues and human well-being. Climate change is behind many environmental issues, such as heat waves, noise pollution, or longer or more intense pollen seasons that negatively affect human health. Even when data availability is increasing, modelling, and monitoring those environmental issues at meaningful spatiotemporal scales is challenging. Some challenges are related to data heterogeneity (including having to work with data at various spatial and temporal scales) and the general lack of data-driven approaches that can natively capture complex spatiotemporal relations.
