2. Fully Funded PhD Position in D-Day Objects at the Intersection of Personal, Family, and National Cultures of Remembrance

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will examine how specific artefacts in the internationally renowned collections of The D-Day Story have functioned as ‘vectors’ of memory operating at the intersection of personal, family, and national cultures of remembrance. Focusing on a select number of artefacts, and with expert support from a joint Loughborough University-The D-Day Story supervisory team, the project’s first focus is to trace object specific ‘biographies’ indicative of D-Day’s rich and still largely overlooked social history. The project’s second key objective turns attention to how such analysis might be proactively ‘used’ to broaden and diversify the story of D-Day told at the museum.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in System issues with designing a large hydrogen passenger vehicle

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this project is to explore how to size, design and operate a pure-electric hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system for large off-road capable passenger vehicles. This includes the fuel cell system, hydrogen storage system, thermal management system, hybrid battery and power electronics, and their optimisation for performance, efficiency, environmental range, robustness and mass. One of the challenges is the thermal management of the fuel cell, which generates low grade heat compared to an internal combustion engine, putting additional load on the cooling system, especially when used in hot climate, off road, uphill, or for towing purposes.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Accessible Transport

Summary of PhD Program:

There is evidence that the lived experiences of disabled people are not considered enough in the design of transport vehicles, modes, and services. As such, in 2021, the Innovation team at the Motability Foundation commenced a pilot scholarship programme for people with lived experience of disability to undertake research into accessible transport. This is a long-term investment in people who may have a long career in transport design having the opportunity to work on complex transportation problems that are directly relevant to many disabled people. The PhD project will be conducted within this framework.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Promoting Healthier Behaviours Among Black African and Caribbean Populations in the UK

Summary of PhD Program:

Obesity and related non-communicable disease (NCD) rates remain high in the UK, with the highest prevalence among people of African and Caribbean origin. Health-related behaviours such as physical activity and diet are key risk factors for these diseases. Existing policies and interventions promoting good health behaviours have not effectively addressed the needs of African and Caribbean populations who often face additional barriers as they tend to reside on more economically disadvantaged areas. New approaches are therefore required to improve the health of this population.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in How to reduce the energy footprint of AI and contribute to a sustainable decarbonised future

Summary of PhD Program:

Current AI models are not designed to reuse and share knowledge. When conditions change, e.g., data distributions, locations, or platforms, retraining needs to occur from scratch. In some cases, like for foundation models or for complex robotics tasks, the process requires very large amount of data and energy. Recent advances towards lifelong learning and sharable models promise to create a new efficient AI landscape in which machine-learned knowledge can be built incrementally and worldwide with optimized energy use. This PhD project aims to advance the latest lifelong learning and sharable AI models to contribute to reduce the energy footprint of AI.
