3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Identification of novel therapies targeting the right ventricle in pulmonary arterial hypertension

Summary of PhD Program:

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a fatal, rapidly progressive disease, leading to right ventricular (RV) failure and death. Though the pathology in PAH begins with an obstructive vasculopathy in the lungs, the prognosis is mainly determined by RV function. However, there is no effective drug directly targeting the RV. This project will identify novel therapeutic targets for RV in PAH using both animal model, clinical samples and a range of metabolomics and proteomics technologies.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Technologies for optogenetic neural interfacing

Summary of PhD Program:

In this PhD, you will develop a novel neural interface technology for optogenetic control of neural circuits. This will be a multi-channel, optoelectronic, neural interface device that has the ability to emit at multiple wavelengths and record the subsequent neural activity in vivo. The multi-wavelength capability means that more than one class of neurons can be excited or inhibited simultaneously. This ability to precisely activate or inhibit specific neural circuits, while recording their activity, opens up the possibility of closed-loop control of neural circuits, with implications for how we best address neurodegenerative disorders.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Marine match-mismatch

Summary of PhD Program:

Phenology is the study of seasonal biological events, such as migration, egg laying, or flowering. The iconic ‘match-mismatch hypothesis’ (Cushing, 1974, 1975) predicts that changes in phenology may affect synchronicity with energy sources and so impact fitness. Examples of this may be failure to migrate in time to exploit a food source elsewhere, or to lay eggs to synchronise hatching with seasonally available food. As species rely on different environmental cues to time these events, it is possible that climate change will disrupt important ecological connections with cascading consequences at the level of the ecosystem.
