1. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Inclusive Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Companies and universities are seeking EDI champions and leaders in engineering. Fully funded Vice Chancellor’s Scholarships are available to students from diverse engineering backgrounds and data analytics, computer science, social sciences and sociology to work on interconnected projects. These studentships will develop diverse future leaders with expertise in EDI practices within engineering research and technology development at the discipline level.
In collaboration with industry partners, we are developing the scope for our cluster projects. We consider a wide range of perspectives and voices contributing to project design to improve diversification in the research, enabling effective research action plans and developing an inclusive research culture.
Application Deadline: 30 June 2023
2. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Initial research will seek to develop bench-marking data within engineering, specifically at the engineering discipline level, to understand the differences within and between sectors. The 3 PhD students working together will enable the research to compare and contrast multiple engineering sectors considering wide-ranging axes of disparity (e.g. gender, disability, race etc) and intersectional diversity (e.g. interconnected relationships between aspects of diversity and disparity). The research aims to develop a framework for the widespread adoption of bench-marking, monitoring and impact assessment alongside the development of legacy demographical understanding.

3. 03 Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
You would investigate a wide range of employee needs – chosen before data collection rather than after – where an employee has already been excluded. Using digital modelling and simulation, we can investigate inclusion of people statically in positions when working, but also dynamically, completing tasks and processes. There is a need to investigate the suitability of these digital tools for wider human needs, for example physical and neurodiversity, beyond traditional anthropometry and bodily Finite Element Analysis.
Application Deadline: 30 June 2023
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D concrete printing processes
Summary of PhD Program:
3-D concrete printing and the latest hybrid manufacturing processes (using robotic milling and finishing processes with concrete printing) are new digitally driven automated construction technologies that can be seen manufacturing buildings worldwide. These processes have huge potential to address the challenge of net-zero construction manufacturing, but we need to understand how to do this and where the technical challenges are.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomimetic antennas
Summary of PhD Program:
Small aircraft present unique technical challenges in terms of antenna installations, and are demanding in terms of weight. Passive beamforming methods are commonly found in nature and are an appealing option as they do not require complex electronics and have low losses. Bats (Chiroptera), for example, have highly complex structures for sonar transmission and reception, and combine this with effective flight.
Application Deadline: 1 June 2023
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrocatalytic ammonia synthesis for sustainable agriculture and energy storage applications
Summary of PhD Program:
A huge amount of nitrogen fixation to ammonia-based fertiliser is required annually to maintain global food supply; it is estimated that artificial fixation accounts for 50% of the terrestrial nitrogen cycle. Current synthesis routes use high temperature and pressure, with hydrocarbon feedstocks providing the required energy and hydrogen. This consumes 2% of global energy production and accounts for 1% of all human carbon dioxide emissions. An efficient, electrically powered, carbon-free ammonia synthesis process is therefore urgently required. Such a process is also key in realising the vision of ammonia as a truly green hydrogen/energy vector.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in High resolution gamma detectors using superconducting materials
Summary of PhD Program:
Accurate analysis of radioactive material is extremely important in the context of nuclear forensics – a vital contributor to law enforcement, intelligence gathering, and anti-terrorism activities relating to trafficked nuclear material. The key performance criteria for a gamma spectrometer for nuclear forensics is its energy resolution – which can make the difference between identifying the source of illegal material or this remaining unknown. This project will capitalise on advances in superconducting devices to design and test the next generation of high-resolution gamma detectors for forensic applications.
Application Deadline: 31st May 2023
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Improving the efficiency of second generation thin film solar cells
Summary of PhD Program:
Solar photovoltaics is becoming the most important source of electricity generation with over a Terawatt already installed globally. Although the growth of solar has been extraordinary, it is a young technology, with much more scope for improvement. This project aims to use world-class characterisation techniques including a new cathodoluminescence facility to determine how defects, impurities and microstructure can affect second-generation solar cell performance. The project will involve a collaboration between the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST) and the Loughborough Materials Characterisation Centre (LMCC) as well as interaction with international laboratories and industry leaders.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Laser processing for nuclear decommissioning
Summary of PhD Program:
The research aims to develop a novel engineering capability to capture, locally, the dust/fume generated when using lasers for cutting or decontamination by robots in nuclear decommissioning. The proposed research will identify the physical phenomena that can be used to handle and separate laser-generated fume for pre-filtering and use this new knowledge to develop solutions for localised separation and pre-filtering systems to enable laser cutting in radioactive environments.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-Parameter wireless sensing for condition monitoring of nuclear-spent fuel canisters
Summary of PhD Program:
Remote wireless sensing has been crucial in nuclear decommissioning, especially for long-term monitoring of metallic nuclear-spent fuel canisters. However, there are considerable challenges, including the fitting of multi-parameter sensors in metallic canisters and the dearth of suitable wireless data transmission mechanisms for embedded multi-parameter sensors in metallic canisters.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Novel metamaterials for wave control at GHz frequencies
Summary of PhD Program:
Communications systems operating at high frequencies in the GHz band are becoming increasingly popular due to limitations in the available spectrum. These higher frequencies are becoming important to 5G/6G systems and other applications. Passive and active millimetre structures based on metamaterials are a key technology to controlling frequency and polarisation of waves in the higher-frequency part of the spectrum.
Application Deadline: 1 June 2023
12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Seeing extreme winds: Using video clips to quantify hazardous winds
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will harness the power of developments in image analysis to solve the real-world challenge of estimating wind hazard. This is an exciting opportunity to apply state-of-the-art techniques (e.g. machine learning) to video clips of moving trees, and conduct corresponding fieldwork to develop new understanding of the natural environment and atmospheric processes at work. At the core of the work will be a campus-scale study, with a variety of CCTV camera data linked to data from the university’s weather station. Initially, the project will use data already collected in a pilot study and existing particle-tracking code to create a local (micro-scale) map of wind hazard.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sport, Exercise and Health
Summary of PhD Program:
The School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences is committed to undertaking initiatives which support under-represented groups to pursue educational and research opportunities across our disciplines. Analysis has shown that small numbers of UK racialised ethnic minority students are undertaking post graduate research degrees within the School. To address this structural inequality, School-funded studentships have been ring-fenced for UK applicants who identify as being from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background. This is part of our wider work to support underrepresented groups within our disciplines.
