1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this PhD you will focus on designing new conversational AI models, based on recent foundation models. The key research question is how these state-of-the-art language models (including multi-modal versions) can be leveraged and adapted to create an AI-powered voicebot in a recruiting context. Key challenges are to achieve (1) controlled adaptation of the question sequence in the conversation; (2) personalization of dialog flow as well as language; and (3) improving engagement to ultimately limit drop-out of potential candidates. As an underlying building block to address (1) and (2), it is crucial to be able to incorporate external knowledge, in terms of domain knowledge (e.g., specific vocabulary, ontologies of skill sets and/or job titles), and conversation-specific information (e.g., on the interviewee, the organization, a predefined conversation structure).

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Materials, Textiles and Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Belgium has been taking a leading position in the transition towards a hydrogen economy thanks to many companies and research institutes active in hydrogen technologies. In addition, Belgium has currently the second largest hydrogen pipeline network in the world and has a strategic position in Western Europe as an import and transit hub for renewable H2 molecules. In the context of these global and local evolutions, Ghent University (UGent) focuses on an important link in the future hydrogen economy, being the storage of hydrogen in pressurized composite tanks, both in the vehicle itself as in refueling stations. Indeed, the success of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles depends both on the development of safe storage options in the vehicle, as well as a supporting refueling infrastructure.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The researcher will work within an Inter-University project on artificial intelligence in collaboration with other Flemish Universities. This project will investigate if AI systems can really equal human performance when it comes to complex tasks. AI systems have to be capable of complex reasoning in a way that is autonomous, intelligent and trustworthy. Therefore, we need systems that can integrate and interpret, represent and understand their complex environment in multiple domains, over large timescales and in shared human-machine contexts.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is a 3D sensing technology based on laser light to measure the distance between an object and the sensor that holds great promise for allowing autonomous machines to see and navigate the world with very high precision. Typically, LiDAR designs comprise a multitude of moving parts (e.g., an assembly of lasers, optics, electronics, and detectors) on a mechanically rotating stage. The need to assemble and align all these parts leads to high costs and relatively low manufacturing volumes, while the wear and tear on the mechanical components limits long-term reliability, and all these factors have been hindering a wide adoption of this technology.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Materials, Textiles and Chemical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD student for a research project on microscale mechanical characterization of fiber reinforced polymer composites using in-situ microscopic techniques. Much more fundamental insights and measurements at the micro-scale are necessary to enable fully predictive multi-scale modelling and faster adaptation of composites. Therefore, we have developed advanced micromechanical test methods for fibre reinforced polymer composites based on in-situ optical and electron microscopy during loading. This includes micro-scale Digital Image Correlation (DIC) which gives full-field strain information at the sub-micron scale, force measurement and correlation of the damage mechanisms at micro- and macro-scale.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

UGent-MMS is partner in a large research project with several leading companies in the automotive industry. This research project aims at developing composite solutions for future hydrogen storage tanks. This PhD vacancy is focused on the use of guided elastic waves for the structural health monitoring of hydrogen tanks under different operational conditions. This involves instrumentation, signal acquisition and -processing, feature extraction and learning algorithms to assess the structural condition of hydrogen storage tanks. Further, a probabilistic framework will be developed to predict the remaining useful lifetime of hydrogen tanks from the guided wave signals.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Law

Summary of PhD Program:

The ERC research project “MIGJUST: Global Migration Justice: Beyond conflicting approaches to migration in international human rights law” (ERC-AdG-2023- 101141743) is seeking to fill three PhD positions. This document concerns the vacancy for research on the Inter-American Commission and Court of Human Rights. The key hypothesis of MIGJUST is that there is a fundamental conflict in human rights case law on migration between the human rights approach, adopted by the Inter-American Court and Commission of Human Rights and the African Court and Commission of Human and Peoples’ Rights, and on the other hand the sovereignty approach of the European Court of Human Rights.

19. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electromechanical

Summary of PhD Program:

The performance of industrial gearboxes often varies due to subtle manufacturing differences, lubricant property changes, assembly inconsistencies, and fluctuating operating conditions. These variations, even in gearboxes of the highest quality, can affect durability and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance unless carefully mitigated. Traditional gear design approaches, governed by standards such as DIN 3990, ISO 6336, or AGMA 2001, fall short in addressing the impact of within-tolerance surface roughness, geometric deviations, and changes in lubricant properties.
