1. Fully Funded PhD Position in 3D realistic and interactive fabric simulation
Summary of PhD Program:
Cloth Simulation has been used widely in many industries such as fashion (design, online retail, etc.) and entertainment (games, movies, etc. ). However, realistic and fast cloth simulation is still a vastly open problem. For instance, realistic garment simulation is very difficult due to the low speed of high-fidelity simulation methods. This project aims to combine state-of-the-art theoretical research in cloth simulation, computer graphics and machine learning to target this problem. It will look into using cutting-edge machine learning techniques to accelerate various cloth simulation models.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational modelling: Neural Control of Behaviour
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of the project is to construct computational models of the worm that impose appropriate dynamics on the hard-wired circuit. Rigorous model analysis then generates biologically testable predictions that will lead to iteration cycles of computational modelling and biological experimentation. Specific projects may focus purely on the computational or experimental aspects, or may combine the two.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Simulating black holes and quantum gravity with optical lattices
Summary of PhD Program:
Unlike the fundamental forces of the Standard Model, such as electromagnetic, weak and strong forces, the quantum effects of gravity are still experimentally inaccessible. The weak coupling of gravity with matter makes it significant only for large masses where quantum effects are too subtle to be measured with current technology. Nevertheless, insight into quantum aspects of gravity is key to understanding unification theories, cosmology or the physics of black holes.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Parallel infrastructure for computational topology
Summary of PhD Program:
Scientific simulations now routinely generate data streams vastly in excess of the ability of humans to interpret. Recent work in data analysis and visualisation has therefore applied topological analysis to the task of feature detection and interpretation. However, most of the algorithms are essentially serial, although some work has been performed on parallelisation. The goal of this PhD would be to identify common patterns across multiple topological computations, and identify how to parallelise not only one single approach, but as many as possible, by exploiting fundamental properties both of the algorithms and of the underlying mathematics that they encode.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Minimal surfaces in Riemannian manifolds
Summary of PhD Program:
The study of minimal surfaces constitutes a central area of research in mathematics, with applications in both geometry and theoretical physics. These beautiful objects have inspired many new areas of research with a particular current focus on understanding the type of minimal surface admitted by a given ambient manifold, coupled with classifying those which are admitted. There are many starting points for a project in this general area, including the related fields of harmonic maps, constant-mean-curvature surfaces, Willmore surfaces, elliptic regularity theory and the spectral analysis of Schroedinger operators on Riemannian manifolds.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Covariant Spectral Theory
Summary of PhD Program:
Families of invertible transformations of geometric sets are rich sources of interesting and important groups. Properties of geometric objects, which are invariant under such transformations, are subject of geometry according to the Erlangen Programme of Felix Klein. Transformations of sets can be naturally extended to actions on linear functional spaces defined on those sets, so we obtain linear representations of groups. There are many questions in analytic function theory which are greatly simplified by a consideration of an appropriate group representation.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum Communications at Short and Long Distances
Summary of PhD Program:
Quantum technologies are expected to offer new computational and communication services. In particular, in order for future quantum computers to be able to talk to each other, new quantum communications protocols need to be devised and implemented. This will help us maximise our computational capacities by employing distributed quantum computing techniques. At short distances, this corresponds to an equivalent of a quantum data centre, whereas, in long distances, this represents what is known as the quantum Internet.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exponential integrators
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this project is to investigate methods to compute the matrix exponential, how to incorporate them in exponential integrators, and to implement this. This project requires some prior knowledge of numerical analysis (numerical linear algebra and numerical methods for differential equations) and some programming experience.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Optimisation Algorithms for Problems with Changeable Parameters
Summary of PhD Program:
The mainstream research in combinatorial optimisation deals with well-defined problems where all problem parameters are known in advance. In real-world scenarios, there is always some degree of uncertainty and variability in problem input. The existing techniques for handling such problems often deal with stability, sensitivity and robustness. Such methods are interesting from the theoretical viewpoint, but their application is usually quite limited due to their complexity.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Difference algebraic groups
Summary of PhD Program:
Difference algebraic groups can be described as subgroups of the general linear group defined by algebraic difference equations in the matrix entries. They occur naturally as Galois groups in certain Galois theories and have applications to arithmetic problems. The main goal of this project is to further develop the very rich and beautiful theory of these groups and to expand their areas of application.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structure and control of DNA origami
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will explore the fundamentals of the DNA self-assemble and its connection to rational design and evoke methods to control the curvature of the nanotiles. It will use a combination of molecular modelling and high resolution imaging of the nanotiles using atomic force microscopy to understand more deeply how DNA origami assembles and what governs their geometric and mechanical properties.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer Simulations of Biological Macromolecules
Summary of PhD Program:
We are developing two lines of research in supermacromoleular biology – one for DNA, and one for proteins. While it is well known that DNA is the molecule of heredity and that the sequence of bases in DNA encodes the genetic information that defines an organism, the way in which genomes are regulated is not understood. Recent experimental data shows that the physical arrangement of DNA within the nucleus is critical to genetic control.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hybrid event beds in confined basins
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will help develop our fundamental understanding of how deep-water sedimentary processes respond to confinement. The project will also help develop an applied understanding of the fill and rock properties of hybrid beds in confined basins, which are hosts of conventional resources, sinks of organic carbon, and potential hosts of man-made pollutants. This project will benefit from field studies in the famous Peïra Cava Basin, SE France; decades of prior studies by the wider research team provide a rigorous stratigraphic framework for the study.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Grassland Degradation Detection and Assessment in China by Remote Sensing
Summary of PhD Program:
This project will focus on devising new remote sensing methods for monitoring the degradation of grasslands, which account for 94% of all degraded drylands. It will study grasslands in China, which cover 42% of national land area, and take advantage of data collected by both Chinese and European Space Agency (ESA) satellites. The project is supported by the DRAGON 5 Programme of ESA and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. The student will spend up to 6 months in Beijing working with our Chinese partner.
