1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding and predicting sensitivity of Amazonia’s forests to increasing heat and drought

Summary of PhD Program:

Tropical forests fulfil important roles both for climate and biodiversity. They are exposed to a range of pressures including an increasingly hotter and erratic climate as well as changing atmospheric composition (particularly CO2 and N2O levels raising) (Lapola et al., 2023). In the Amazon there is clear evidence not only of temperatures increasing but also of shifts in the hydrological cycle, with dry season length and seasonal amplitude of precipitation increasing. How these forests will be affected on a long-term is unclear.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hybrid event beds in confined basins

Summary of PhD Program:

This project will help develop our fundamental understanding of how deep-water sedimentary processes respond to confinement. The project will also help develop an applied understanding of the fill and rock properties of hybrid beds in confined basins, which are hosts of conventional resources, sinks of organic carbon, and potential hosts of man-made pollutants. This project will benefit from field studies in the famous Peïra Cava Basin, SE France; decades of prior studies by the wider research team provide a rigorous stratigraphic framework for the study.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Enhancing real-time performance in digital wireless communications using embedded machine learning

Summary of PhD Program:

The overall research hypothesis addressed by this project is that machine learning can provide quantitative insights into the likelihood of successful message transmissions over a wireless communication channel by analysing and learning from messages previously sent over the same and adjacent communication channels. Such quantitative insights could then be used to reduce uncertainty and therefore assist schedulers to achieve timely and reliable delivery of messages in real-time distributed systems and to provide valuable metrics when evaluating and optimizing wireless communication systems in general.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ageing and/as Performance

Summary of PhD Program:

This interdisciplinary project aims to mobilise the term performance, across its many manifestations in different fields of research and human activity, as a lens to analyse, bring together and develop a comparative understanding of different aspects of ageing. Performance is a broad term which encompasses artistic products, social behaviours and identity categories. Performance, also, signifies achievement according to a pre-established standard and in this way it can also refer to professional attainment as well as technological or physiological function.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Inequality of timely Clostridioidies difficile infection testing, treatment and management in hospitalised and community patients

Summary of PhD Program:

Clostridioidies difficile infection (CDI) is the leading cause of hospital associated diarrhoea in the western world, but there is increasing recognition of cases within the community setting. Although current diagnostic and treatment guidelines include some information on community cases, this is based on weak evidence. Inequalities potentially exist for CDI patients both in hospitals and the community. We know that diarrhoea sampling and CDI testing practices vary widely across institutions. A recent European study of CDI also found that 50% of cases in the community were never tested for the infection by their original healthcare provider; lack of suspicion is largely based on the assumption that CDI is a hospital associated infection.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Edge intelligence for Internet of Things

Summary of PhD Program:

Edge intelligence for the Internet of Things (IoT) presents a revolutionary solution to the limitations of existing approaches to data processing and decision-making. Traditional methods, heavily reliant on centralized cloud infrastructure, often encounter challenges such as latency issues, bandwidth constraints, and security vulnerabilities. In contrast, edge intelligence decentralizes data processing by leveraging localized computational power and analytics capabilities, thereby reducing latency, enhancing data privacy, and minimizing bandwidth usage.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular resolution of biomolecular assembly by combining neutron scattering and coarse-grained simulation

Summary of PhD Program:

Nanoscale biological building blocks play a vital role in biological systems and can be assembled to create novel biomaterials for use in healthcare applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. To date, we have employed neutron diffraction and simulation based structural refinement to study the atomistic structure of small building blocks such as aqueous sugars and amino acids, providing rich information on biomolecule hydration and biomolecule interactions. A step change is urgently needed in our approach, to move to more realistic, larger molecules and higher concentrations.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Space-based constraints on UK ammonia emissions and air quality impacts

Summary of PhD Program:

We are offering an exciting PhD opportunity, in the School of Earth and Environment, to undertake novel research targeting one of the major air quality challenges facing the UK – the ammonia problem! Ammonia (NH3) is emitted primarily from diffuse agricultural sources and difficult to quantify for legislative purposes. Unlike other air pollutants, gaseous NH3 emissions have not decreased over recent decades and continue to promote extensive formation of ammonium nitrate aerosol – a hazardous air pollutant. Therefore, this project aims to exploit state-of-the-art satellite observations and modelling to better constrain NH3 emissions, their temporal changes (from a legislative point of view) and to quantify the impact of these emissions changes on key air pollutants such as PM2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 microns).

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in Opinion dynamics of rational agents

Summary of PhD Program:

Models of opinion dynamics typically treat the spread of ideas like an epidemic, with individuals becoming ‘infected’ with a certain opinion and then passing it on to others. Indeed, observing how beliefs and opinions spread on social media it can often seem as though people have little control over which beliefs they adopt, and which they pass on. However, people are not simply passive recipients and vectors for ideas; expressing themselves online is a decision, and one that they make so as to accomplish their goals, whether conscious or not.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physical Layer Security for Mobile Optical Wireless Communications Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Optical wireless communication (OWC) is a highly directive communication system. This directivity hinders its practical implementation in mobile applications. Short-range OWC systems, which integrate lighting and communication functionalities and support multiple users using LED sources, are commonly referred to as visible light communication (VLC). In comparison, long-range device-to-device OWC systems that utilize laser sources are known as free space optical (FSO) communication. While the directive nature of OWC has been believed to offer security advantages, it does not guarantee security in multiuser VLC systems as the authenticity of users is not guaranteed.
