2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Impact of Climate Change on Renewable Electricity Production and future Energy Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

Climate change is already reshaping our world and will continue to do so in the coming decades. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential to limiting future climate change, with renewable energy systems playing a pivotal role in transitioning away from fossil fuels. Wind turbines, solar photovoltaics and hydropower form the backbone of low-emission (“green”) electricity generation. However, these technologies are inherently dependent on weather conditions, which are likely to be influenced by climate change.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Image processing of cryo-EM data

Summary of PhD Program:

We are offering a PhD position dedicated to the advancement of cryo-EM image analysis methods at the interface of Structural Biology and Electron Imaging at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. Cryo-EM has become a very powerful method to visualize ice-embedded samples including purified proteins at close to atomic resolution. Typically, single-particle cryo-EM as well as cryo-ET are based on conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) exposures taken in underfocus. In this project, we aim to further develop the imaging analysis capabilities for (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and TEM in order to advance our understanding of vitrified biological specimens.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Inverse design of microstructures for novel sustainable structural metals

Summary of PhD Program:

Digital methods for inverse materials design are essential to efficiently create new, sustainable and recycling-adapted structural metals. Alloys with a reduced number of elements, so-called lean alloys, and material systems with a high tolerance to impurities from the use of secondary raw materials are of particular relevance for improving recyclability and sustainability. Al-Ca is a promising lean alloy system for additive manufacturing, as the mechanical properties can be tailored through phase composition, distribution and morphology by tuning process parameters.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in European energy transition – Modeling and analysis of challenges for successful implementation

Summary of PhD Program:

The transformation of the European energy system towards greenhouse gas neutrality is fundamentally changing our energy landscape. In the future, wind and solar power plants are expected to provide most of our electricity. Hydrogen and its derivatives are becoming increasingly important – and even during periods of low wind and sun, new, emission-free technologies and strategies are necessary to ensure a stable supply. For the European energy transition to succeed, key infrastructure measures must be implemented in a timely manner.
