1. Fully Funded PhD Position in effect of COVID-19 on lower urinary tract function
Summary of PhD Program:
This studentship will focus on lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS; comprising urinary urgency, frequency and nocturia) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. In particular, their trajectory and impact will be measured, through identifying symptomatic and biomarker associations. This study will follow a current, initial symptom survey study that is comparing LUTS between those with and without recent COVID-19 infection.
Application Deadline: 7 July 2023
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ambulance staff assessment of pain in people living with dementia
Summary of PhD Program:
Assessment of pain by ambulance staff in an emergency for someone living with dementia is currently inadequate. Assessment is crucial to ensure pain is treated and reduce the chances of complications; if pain is not accurately assessed then injuries, such as hip fractures, could be missed by ambulance staff. Lack of timely treatment leads to a high risk of a need for further healthcare, longer hospital stays and death. In previous research, we found pain is less often recorded in ambulance care records for older people living with dementia compared to older people without dementia. It is likely that this is because it is difficult for ambulance staff to assess pain using the usual methods, particularly if the patient is confused or distressed and finds it difficult to communicate.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Diet and Neuroinflammation
Summary of PhD Program:
This is an exciting opportunity to study for a fully funded PhD in Molecular/Cellular Neuroscience within the thriving Centre for Research in Biosciences at the University of the West of England. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease worldwide, and the fastest growing. The reasons for this are not known, but recent studies have suggested a link between diet, the gut microbiome and the risk of developing PD. Many studies highlight the importance of neuroinflammation in the development of PD, and this project will study how diet and the gut microbiome can influence neuroinflammation and lead to the pathologies associated with PD.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating the impact of sport events on health and wellbeing
Summary of PhD Program:
Sport-related activities represent an important area of health and well-being enhancing activities. Transformative Sport Service Research (TSSR) is a new framework (Inoue et al., 2020) aiming at sport consumers (i.e. athletes, spectators, sponsors) and sport service providers (i.e. employees). It helps generate knowledge that has implications for the production and delivery of sport services that occur through interaction, during which participants experience upward or downward changes to their health and well-being. Sport services may contribute to building a meaningful and productive community where individuals feel valued and integrated. But if managed poorly, sport services can have detrimental effects on everyone involved.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Macrofinancial Institutional Design for the Climate Transition
Summary of PhD Program:
We are interested in project proposals which aim to develop policy-relevant analysis of macrofinancial institutional design for the climate transition. We welcome proposals focusing on the macroeconomics of the green transition including growth, industrial policy, fiscal policy and monetary policy. We also welcome proposals on the political economy of market-based finance, banks and pension funds in the green transition, which could explore, for example, the role of private equity/hedge funds from the point of view of the Finance Franchise – the idea that private financial activities are publicly funded, franchised and/or insured. Proposals may focus on institutional design in either the global North or the global South. Given Bristol Research in Economics expertise on finance and development, we welcome proposals on the political economy of extractivism and green transformations in the Global South.
