1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating porosity changes and stress mechanics of corroding nuclear wastes under confined expansion
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will work alongside leading teams within the University of Leeds and Sellafield Ltd, to investigate the nature of waste evolution under storage conditions in order to predict volume changes and resulting forces generated on confinement packaging. Specifically, under interim storage, Magnox alloy undergoes a series of physical and chemical changes; such as corrosion reactions forming brucite, as well as with CO2 to form hydromagnesite and other magnesium hydroxycarbonate phases as a soil/clay like sediment bed, which will gradually dry-out over long timescales. Behaviour under confined conditions and over the timescales of storage (many decades) is poorly understood, resulting in significant costs to the UK taxpayer to ensure wastes are safely stored.
Application Deadline: 15 July 2024

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Understanding and predicting sensitivity of Amazonia’s forests to increasing heat and drought
Summary of PhD Program:
Tropical forests fulfil important roles both for climate and biodiversity. They are exposed to a range of pressures including an increasingly hotter and erratic climate as well as changing atmospheric composition (particularly CO2 and N2O levels raising) (Lapola et al., 2023). In the Amazon there is clear evidence not only of temperatures increasing but also of shifts in the hydrological cycle, with dry season length and seasonal amplitude of precipitation increasing. How these forests will be affected on a long-term is unclear. To observe and understand mechanistically what changes these forests are undergoing and whether limits of functioning may be reached, members our group maintain an widespread pan-tropical forest census network.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing new behavioural models at the intersection of econometrics and machine learning
Summary of PhD Program:
The aim of this PhD project is to specifically create more links between two out of the three paradigms: econometric/behavioural models and machine learning algorithms. In recent years, machine learning algorithms have steadily gained attention in the context of modelling individual decision making processes and are challenging traditional econometric approaches with their increased prediction performances and their ability to handle complex datasets. Both approaches seek to understand individual choice behaviour, but from a different perspective putting attention on different aspects: econometric approaches seek to understand the parameters influencing observed behaviour and their impact on the choice itself; machine learning algorithms seek to predict the outcome of the choice by taking a data-driven approach and finding complex associations within the data.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in From engram to tomogram: the in situ structure of memory in the mammalian brain by cryo-electron tomography (cryoET)
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking an ambitious PhD applicant that will join the Frank group to explore the in situ structure of the mouse and human brain to uncover structural mechanisms of memory and its demise in neurodegenerative diseases.
Each memory in your brain is stored by a subset of cells that are connected via synapses into a neuronal circuit, called an ‘engram’. Crucially, it is the molecular and cellular structure of the synaptic connections in neuronal circuits that are necessary for storing long-term memories. This project seeks to use advanced optogenetic labelling techniques combined with in situ structural biology (cryo-electron microscopy) to determine the structure of engram synapses and other fundamental macromolecular structures related to memory and its loss in neurodegenerative disease.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Space-based constraints on UK ammonia emissions and air quality impacts
Summary of PhD Program:
We are offering an exciting PhD opportunity, in the School of Earth and Environment, to undertake novel research targeting one of the major air quality challenges facing the UK – the ammonia problem! Ammonia (NH3) is emitted primarily from diffuse agricultural sources and difficult to quantify for legislative purposes. Unlike other air pollutants, gaseous NH3 emissions have not decreased over recent decades and continue to promote extensive formation of ammonium nitrate aerosol – a hazardous air pollutant. Therefore, this project aims to exploit state-of-the-art satellite observations and modelling to better constrain NH3 emissions, their temporal changes (from a legislative point of view) and to quantify the impact of these emissions changes on key air pollutants such as PM2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 microns).
