1. Fully Funded PhD Position in ‘Active matter in complex environments’

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled PhD candidate who will experimentally investigate the fundamentals of swimming active microorganisms in complex fluids under various degrees of confinement. You will use state-of-the-art microscopic imaging systems to characterize the motility of one (or multiple) biological (and/or synthetic) microswimmers in complex fluids in the presence of a rigid (or deformable) confinement. The experiments will be complemented by theoretical and/or numerical modelling. The project represents a paradigm shift in understanding the motility of microorganisms in realistic complex environments, and may provide fundamental understanding of the (bio)physical principles underpinning the origins of multicellularity.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in novel micro-MRI and micro-XRF techniques for plant sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

Non-destructive techniques, such as micro-XRF imaging and microscopic Magnetic Resonance Imaging (micro-MRI) offer insight into a variety of internal structural and metabolic information. Micro-XRF yields insight in the elemental distribution, while MRI visualizes the internal 3D structure of a live plant. Additionally, other physico-chemical characteristics can be probed by micro-MRI, such as the local environment/mobility, water diffusion and (diurnal) flows and chemical/metabolite information. However, their combined potential is underexplored. We aim to exploit the complementarity of these techniques for plant phenotyping applications.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Assessing fire resilience of Amazonian forests

Summary of PhD Program:

You will contribute to a better understanding of the ability of tropical forests to resist and recover (i.e. the resilience) from fire. Specifically, you will assess the mechanisms underlying fire resilience by measuring plant functional traits that may be important for fire resistance (e.g. thick bark, low flammability) and fire recovery (e.g. resprouting ability, availability of sugar reserves). You will then scale up from species-level fire resilience to forest community-level and Amazon-wide fire resilience, and assess how fire resilience at different scales is determined by plant functional traits and fire regime (intensity and frequency).

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in TOSS – Computational Biology for biomanufacturing PFAS alternatives

Summary of PhD Program:

The offered PhD position will be part of a Dutch-funded project, which aims to develop workflows that lead ultimately to rapid, tailored production by microbes of sustainable, non-toxic substitutes of Persistent and Mobile Substances (such as the so-called, “forever chemicals” like PFAS). These petrochemical-based substances have been used since long in our society in very many settings (coatings, flame retardants, construction materials, etc.). However, they have been increasingly recognised as toxic and are bound to substituted urgently by biobased processes. This cooperative project is highly multidisciplinary and to be carried out jointly by chemists, synthetic biologists, biotechnologists, material scientists, AI-experts and social scientists.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ethics of AI-enabled plant breeding for sustainability

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project focusses on the responsible AI driven breeding tools intended for breeding extra-resilient crops. Responsible breeding tools for extra resilient crops intend to be responsive to societal concerns regarding AI. These concerns do not only concern the micro level ethical challenges with regard to specific applications like ownership or autonomy, but also the system level of societal resistance against the industrialization of the agricultural sector for instance. This raises the question what these concerns are and how responsible breeding tools for extra resilient crops can become responsive to both the micro and system level societal concerns.
