2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Surgical Robotics
Summary of PhD Program:
Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized medicine by enabling interventions without large incisions, thereby significantly improving clinical outcomes. Such surgical techniques include insertions of needles, catheters, and micro-robots. For effective medical diagnosis and treatment, the device must reach its intended target. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of the procedure and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop methods for modeling and controlling a range soft/flexible surgical devices and medical microrobots, as they interact and navigate through the body.
Techniques would be developed to track and control the path of the novel devices using images (MR and ultrasound imaging modalities). The present project will be conducted within the Surgical Robotics Laboratory and the Department of Biomechanical Engineering. In addition there are excellent opportunities for collaboration with the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University Medical Centre Groningen, and several institutions abroad.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tailoring large-scale turbulence with bespoke small-scale fibers
Summary of PhD Program:
The bottlenecks for experimental investigation of soft or anisotropic particles in turbulence are the lack of powerful equipment for turbulence generation including sophisticated measurement techniques, and the low throughput of processes that enable fabrication of complex-shaped particles with controlled stiffness. The objective of this project is to open up and investigate unexplored parameter spaces of particle-laden turbulence. In collaboration with another research group we will design and fabricate tailored particles via in-air photopolymerization, a new platform for particle fabrication. The connection between the in-air process and the particle properties will be opened for the first time, by high-speed imaging of the flow and solidification dynamics during particle formation. Particles with controlled shape, flexibility, and local composition will be fabricated and placed in turbulent flows.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Verification of Efficient and Secure Parallel Algorithms
Summary of PhD Program:
Are you interested in Theorem Proving? And want to use your skills to make software more secure? Then this position may be for you!
To fully exploit the potential of modern hardware, parallel algorithms are required. However, these are also prone to new types of hard-to-find bugs, like data races. In critical software, these frequently cause costly incidents or open the door for hackers.
In this project you will apply a theorem prover to show the correctness of parallel software. The challenge is two-fold: first, theoretical models of concurrency have to be formalized in the theorem prover, and, second, techniques to scale them to real software have to be explored.
