Summary of PhD Program:
The candidate will join a highly-motivated and diverse group of researchers who study the genetics and genomics of crop domestication using tomato and related species as model system. The successful candidate will perform research on a project to investigate the function of gene regulatory sequences in the context of crop domestication. More specifically, the candidate will study variation in regulatory sequences that affected flower formation during tomato domestication and engineer novel regulatory sequences by genome editing. The candidate will conduct cutting-edge approaches in molecular biology, confocal microscopy, and genomics, including novel applications in precision genome editing and high-resolution RNA imaging. The project will include wet and dry lab experiments, and activities in growth chambers and greenhouses. The position is under the responsibility of Professor Christine Mohr, and co-supervised by Dr Domicele Jonauskaite. Over the past 10 years, we have been interested in the links between colour and affect. The Vettiger Lab at the Department of Fundamental Microbiology (DMF), University of Lausanne, Switzerland, invites applications for a PhD position funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Our research focuses on bacterial cell envelope biogenesis, a fundamental process essential for bacterial morphogenesis and a key target of many antibiotics. Particularly, we have a long-lasting interested in uncovering the spatiotemporal regulation of cell wall remodeling. To address these questions, we employ a multidisciplinary approach that integrates bacterial cell biology with live-cell fluorescence microscopy, cryo-electron tomography, genetics, biochemistry, and biophysics. Recently, we combined these methods to elucidate the molecular mechanism of septal peptidoglycan remodeling during E. coli cell division (Navarro and Vettiger et al., Nat Micro 2022; Navarro and Vettiger et al., bioRxiv 2025).
