1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geography, with a focus on urban expansion and encroachment on ecologically sensitive areas in African cities
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD fellowship is part of the research project “Urban encroachment – untangling drivers and dynamics of land-use transitions in ecologically sensitive areas” funded by a Sapere Aude: DFF Starting Grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The overarching aim of this project is to identify and promote more sustainable trajectories of urban expansion, which will allow African cities to accommodate rapidly growing populations, while preserving ecologically sensitive areas, benefiting from ecosystem services and building resilience to climate change. The research will entail a comparative case study of two rapidly growing cities – Accra in Ghana and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania – which have been characterized by extensive informal expansion in recent decades.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in In Vivo Pharmacology
Summary of PhD Program:
The present project is a collaboration between the Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology Lab and the Laboratory of liquid crystalline nano-self-assemblies (Pharmaceutical Physical and Analytical Chemistry group, the Department of Pharmacy) at University of Copenhagen. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD; previously termed: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)) is a prominent contributor to morbidity and mortality worldwide. It represents the most common cause of liver disease and life-threatening liver failure due to steatohepatitis (MASH) and associated liver fibrosis, with substantial health-care costs for its prevention or management. In line with the urgent global need for new therapies to treat patients with late-stage liver fibrosis, this collaborative project studies a simple-by-design multifunctional nanotherapeutic platform for treatment.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in climate warming responses of Sphagnum functionality and carbon balance
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD project will focus on climate warming responses of Sphagnum moss and the consequences for ecosystem functioning and input and output of C from ecosystems. Sphagnum mires are natural and efficient carbon stores, but we lack understanding about the stability of this carbon under changing and especially warmer climate. Techniques involved in the project include field-based automatic CO2 flux measurement, microscopy, laboratory incubation, chemical characterization of Sphagnum and in situ enzyme characterization. The PhD project is highly collaborative with opportunities for research exchange at INRAe in Marseille, France, and at Cambridge University, UK. The research questions of the PhD project build on recent advancement of our understanding of the Sphagnum cell wall composition and on field-based evidence of Sphagnum climate warming responses. Ultimately, the PhD project aims to uncover how Sphagnum will function as a C sequestrator in a future warmer climate.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in newborn infectious diseases and therapeutics
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD position will be a part of a project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation within Basic Bioscience and Biomedicine. The overall aim of the project is to explore how early life nutrition and Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine can prevent sepsis and mortality in infected newborns. Every year, millions of newborn infants, especially those born prematurely, die due to infection during the first month of life. In low-income settings including Africa, BCG vaccine administered shortly after birth in low-birth-weight infants confers protective effects against neonatal infection and all-cause mortality. This protective effect is beyond the specific protection of tuberculosis that BCG is supposed to target via adaptive immunity. This has contributed to the discovery of non-specific effects of vaccines.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in organoid modelling of the post-acute phase of COVID
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project we aim to understand and explain the mechanistic link between the post-acute phase (PAP) of COVID-19 and risk of noncommunicable diseases. More specifically, we aim to determine the clinical and biological mechanisms behind the increased risk of reduced organ function in pulmonary, cardiovascular, and renal systems associated with the PAP of COVID-19.
Your primary research area will be to generate, assess and use induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived organoids to support the project. You will optimize the protocols for kidney and lung organoid generation and use this model system to assess novel immune factors in blood samples from human controls and patients suffering from COVID. Using both 2D and 3D representative model systems, you will, in collaboration with other group members assess viability, fibrosis, senescence load, bioenergetic changes and morphologic changes.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioinformatics/ Data Science/ Machine Learning
Summary of PhD Program:
The position is part of a research project generously funded by the Carlsberg Foundation entitled “Look who’s talking: decoding protein-protein dialogue using ChatGPT”.
WHAT? Inside every cell of any organism, hundreds to thousands of distinct proteins are constantly interacting with each other. Together, this dialogue between proteins determine virtually every facet of cellular behaviour and function.
WHY? Despite the fundamental importance of these protein-protein interactions, we still do not fully understand this dialogue between proteins. Some of the open questions are: Which proteins are interacting which each other? How do they know who to interact with? How do they precisely interact with each other? And why do they interact with each other?

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in forest growth modelling
Summary of PhD Program:
Sustainable forest management is a critical component of environmental conservation and climate change mitigation. Accurate growth models play a pivotal role in guiding decision-making processes related to forestry practices. However, in the face of evolving forest management paradigms such as closer-to-nature forestry, forests managed for biodiversity conservation, and climate-targeted forestry, there is an urgent need to develop updated growth models that incorporate parametric modeling and where relevant novel AI methodologies. This proposed PhD project aims to address this crucial knowledge gap by advancing growth models for changing forest management and environmental sustainability.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Computer Science and/or Combinatorial Optimization
Summary of PhD Program:
The MIAO research group has a unique profile in that we are doing cutting-edge research both on the mathematical foundations of efficient computation and on state-of-the-art practical algorithms for real-world problems. This creates a very special environment, where we do not only conduct in-depth research on different theoretical and applied topics, but where different lines of research cross-fertilise each other and unexpected and exciting synergies often arise. Much of the activities of the group revolve around powerful algorithmic paradigms such as, e.g., Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving, Gröbner basis computations, integer linear programming, and constraint programming. This leads to classical questions in computational complexity theory—though often with new, fascinating twists—but also involves work on designing and coding up clever algorithms that can exploit the power of such paradigms in practice.
