1. Fully Funded PhD Position in low-dose electron microscopy techniques for atomically precise characterisation of single quantum dots

Summary of PhD Program:

The Track The Twin Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network: Quantum dots (QDs) exemplify the successful transfer of innovative nanomaterials from a lab-scale invention to a technology that offers better and more power-efficient electronic devices, or makes buildings generate renewable energy. Such implementations, however, keep QDs under permanent loading, such as constant illumination, elevated temperature or exposure to environmental agents. Efforts to make QDs resilient against loading induced ageing and loss of performance are time-consuming and costly.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in experimental nanophysics and nonlinear optics

Summary of PhD Program:

Organic dipolar molecules have attracted much interest over the past decades because of their very large nonlinear optical (NLO) response, holding promise for applications in photonics. Yet, a long standing issue is that to achieve a macroscopic NLO response, the asymmetry intrinsic to dipolar molecules needs to be extended from the molecular scale, over the supramolecular mesoscale, all the way to the macroscopic scale. This PhD project builds on an idea first demonstrated at UAntwerp, that dipolar NLO molecules spontaneously adopt an ideal head-to-tail alignment when confined as one-dimensional arrays inside carbon nanotubes, resulting in a dramatic enhancement of the NLO response by orders of magnitude through a coherent addition of molecular responses (results published in Nature Nanotechnology in 2015).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in phytohormone physiology and biochemistry

Summary of PhD Program:

Plants are exposed to multiple abiotic stresses like drought, submergence, radiation and soil toxicity, resulting in growth adaptations. Several plant hormones are known as crucial players in the control of stress responses. Among these ethylene, ABA, and jasmonic acid are well-known. Hormone metabolism determines their steady state, and some metabolites serve particular additional roles. This project aims to unravel how and under which form ACC and jasmonic acid control responses to stress e.g. flooding and drought. The following techniques will be used: transcriptomics, metabolomics, in situ mass spectrometric imaging, live cell microscopy, and the analysis of oxidative stress markers.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in functional and ecological morphology, behavior and genomics of cichlids

Summary of PhD Program:

You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on functional trade-offs, behavior and genomics related to trophic flexibility in cichlids. You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis on functional trade-offs, behaviour and genomics related to trophic flexibility in cichlids. While most cichlid species have evolved behavioural and morphological adaptations to specific dietary niches, they also have retained the possibility to feed on other food types. Hence, the flexibility of the feeding apparatus to deal with different food types and the behavioural characteristics that promote opportunistic foraging are important factors in the feeding ecology of cichlids.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in molecular and computational neurogenomics

Summary of PhD Program:

The overarching goal of this proposal is to understand why and how dysregulation of omnipresent and constantly expressed ARS proteins leads to dying-back neurodegeneration and affects specifically the peripheral neurons (PNs). This neuronal population contains the most polarized cells in our body and their sophisticated morphology and function render them highly susceptible to degeneration. The preliminary data generated in-house as well as the available public data suggest mechanisms involving genetic, epigenetic and chromatin organisation factors governing the cell-type specific response to ARS mutations.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in architecture, digitalisation and real estate markets

Summary of PhD Program:

Do you want to be part of the circular revolution to rethink the way we value the built environment? In order to make our cities more circular, we need to fundamentally revisit the way that we define and quantify the value of our built environment. This fully-funded doctoral project is part of a Marie Sklodowska Curie Action Doctoral Network, QuiVal, a programme funded by the European Union with the aim to develop a fundamentally new approach to real estate valuation, allowing the sector to rapidly transition towards a more sustainable, low carbon and circular future.
