2. Fully Funded PhD Position in The impact of digital decarbonisation on physical and mental health
Summary of PhD Program:
Psychological stress exposure is a risk factor for a range of long-term health conditions. A prominent, real-world and ongoing stressor is climate change, which can impact our physical and mental health and yet remains largely unexplored. As society progresses decarbonization efforts towards net zero, such efforts may also act as an inadvertent stressor for individuals across the digital ecosystem.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physiological and perceived effects of the menstrual cycle on sport and exercise performance
Summary of PhD Program:
Women are participating in sport in unprecedented numbers. However, sports science research in female athletes remains surprisingly under-investigated. This has resulted in study findings from male-focused research being applied to females, and has resulted in a poor understanding of the effects of the menstrual cycle on exercise performance in female athletes.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in BAME in Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
The School is committed to undertaking initiatives which support under-represented groups to pursue educational and research opportunities across our disciplines. Analysis has shown that small numbers of UK racialised ethnic minority students are undertaking post graduate research degrees within the School. To address this structural inequality, School-funded studentships have been ring-fenced for UK applicants who identify as being from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background. This is part of our wider work to support underrepresented groups within our disciplines.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sport and physical activity as tools to promote a healthy menopause transition
Summary of PhD Program:
In this PhD you will seek to explore, taking a longitudinal, intervention approach, the role of different forms and intensities of sport and PA (for example, cardiovascular versus strength based activities, individual versus team/group based activities). The PhD will also explore the impact of sport and PA on the mental wellbeing of peri/menopausal women from a variety of different groups (e.g., physical activity background, BAME women and those with intersecting identities), and using a range of methodologies (qualitative interviews and surveys). You will work with women and PA providers to understand how PA supports the menopause transition and how initial and sustained engagement can be improved, particularly for previously inactive, underserved, and under-represented groups.
Application Deadline: 15 June 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum reservoir computing for artificial intelligence
Summary of PhD Program:
The rapid development of Quantum Technologies 2.0 over the last two decades – especially in quantum communication, simulation and computation – has pushed this field into the mainstream of technological innovation, with the expectation of major economic impacts. While universal quantum computing is the stated Holy Grail of Quantum Technologies 2.0, its implementation on a scale necessary to practically solve high impact problems remains elusive for current, or feasible in the near-term, technologies.
Application Deadline: 28 June 2024
7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation as a countermeasure to sarcopenia due to ageing and/or disease
Summary of PhD Program:
Sarcopenia is characterised by a loss of muscle strength, muscle mass, as well as low physical performance, and is now classified as a disease in its own right. Although often associated with ageing, it is also recognised as a complication of numerous other long term health conditions (e.g. chronic kidney disease) and is associated with worse clinical outcomes, including poor quality of life, higher hospitalisation rates and increased mortality. The annual cost of sarcopenia to the NHS has been estimated to be around £2.5 billion.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Investigating biomechanical factors linked with fear of movement in pregnant women during physical activity and the supportive role of sportswear
Summary of PhD Program:
During pregnancy, exercise has been shown to have multiple benefits for mother and baby and is actively encouraged in health guidelines worldwide. However, there can be several barriers for women which prevent them or limit their exercising habits during these periods. Some of the identified barriers could be related to the significant anatomical, physiological, psychological and biomechanical changes that women experience, however little is understood as to how these changes affect a woman exercising. Fear of movement during pregnancy has been linked to a reduction in exercise habits however little is known about how the psychological constructs link to physical movements and the possible role that sports products could have in supporting exercise during this period.
Application Deadline: 15 June 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Hydration, metabolic health and physical function across adulthood
Summary of PhD Program:
This project takes an integrative physiology approach to understand how hydration/24-h water intake influence metabolic health and physical function in young/older adults, particularly in the context of climate change/global warming. The project will involve laboratory-based human data collection (cross-sectional or intervention studies) to understand the impact of hydration/24-h water intake on metabolic health/functional outcomes in younger/older adults. This human data collection will be accompanied by in-vitro/ex-vivo experiments to investigate relevant intracellular signalling pathways.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
Engineering is potentially the most important career in the world, influencing the lives of billions of people worldwide due to the enormous range of tools, equipment and products designed or created by engineers. Tackling engineering skills shortages is the most important business imperative work on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for the future of engineering identified by the Royal Academy of Engineering, with large gaps in graduates required by industry. With the Royal Academy of Engineering, Professional Engineering Institutions, Charities and Global Engineering Companies recognising these issues, many initiatives have begun to deliver greater recognition of challenges surrounding under-representation.
Application Deadline: 31 July 2024
11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exploring the experiences of fear of movement in pregnant population as a barrier to exercise uptake
Summary of PhD Program:
Regular participation in exercise during pregnancy is associated with significant benefits for the mother and baby, with reduced risks of common pregnancy concerns such as hypertension, gestational diabetes, weight gain, preterm birth, maternal psychosocial wellbeing and potential benefits for cognitive and language development in children. Evidence suggests that most pregnant women do not meet the current recommended guidelines of least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week despite acknowledging the benefits of exercise during the perinatal period.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of high efficiency, second generation solar cells
Summary of PhD Program:
Solar PV is becoming the most important form of electricity generation word-wide. Working with the industry leader, First Solar Inc, this project aims to further improve the efficiency of thin film cadmium telluride solar cells. We will achieve this by improving our understanding of the structure and electrical properties of defects in polycrystalline solar cells. We will use new materials for buffer layers and new dopants for the light absorber. We will use a variety of experimental techniques to probe the devices on the atomic scale, including state-of-the-art High Resolution Electron Microscopy and Cathodoluminescence.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Breast support during the menstrual cycle and exercise: a measurement systems approach
Summary of PhD Program:
Women’s engagement in sport and exercise is heavily influenced by the stage of their menstrual cycle and appropriate support wear. Breast size, shape and sensitivity varies throughout a menstrual cycle, requiring better measurement and knowledge to define these changes and how to support women to engage in exercise. This PhD focuses on a novel measurement system to see these breast size and motion changes at a greater resolution. This will better inform women on how their breasts change and move throughout the menstrual cycle, to improve support for women and increase female engagement in exercise.
