4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing Bio-based Solutions for Eco-friendly Pavement Infrastructures

Summary of PhD Program:

Asphalt concrete relies heavily on the extraction and processing of non-renewable resources. These processes deplete finite fossil fuel reserves, contributing to resource scarcity. In recent years, bio-asphalt has emerged as an environmentally responsible solution for road construction, offering a promising alternative to petroleum asphalt. In this context, lignin, a natural polymer found in plant cell walls, has gained attention as a valuable resource. Lignin can be extracted from a wide range of residual lignocellulose biomass sources, rendering it an abundant biopolymer. Given its distinctive molecular structure, lignin possesses significant potential as a valuable functional additive in composite materials. Nonetheless, it remains an underutilized resource.

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in advanced membrane characterization for redox flow battery

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to gain fundamental insights into the membranes in redox flow batteries (RFBs) through combining electrochemical cell investigations at KTH with advanced characterization techniques using X-rays and neutrons in combination with molecular dynamics simulations at DTU. In terms of costs and output power, the membrane is a critical component that should meet the requirements of high ion conductivity, low permeability of redox species, and high chemical and mechanical stability. To advance the development of membranes more research is needed to understand the relationship between structural properties and performance. RFBs are safe and cost-effective for stationary and long-duration energy storage (> 6h), as the energy and power can be scaled independently.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular simulation of wetting

Summary of PhD Program:

The energetics and dynamics of wetting are of high interest from both fundamental scientific and technological points of view. Often the macroscopic behavior of wetting is dominated by processes at molecular scale at the interface. Here in particular the three-phase contact line is of importance, where substrate, liquid and gas (or another liquid) meet. The scales involved can not be observed directly in experiments. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations can provide the required spatial and time resolutions. In this project we will study how mixtures of two liquids or a liquid plus surfactant wet surfaces. The surfaces can be either simple or have molecules attached to them that interact with the liquid in different ways. In experiments non-trivial behavior has been observed.
