2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electronics and Information Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

In the LCP group of Ghent University (lcp.elis.ugent.be) we have a long history of modelling and testing electrophoretic motion of particles in polar and nonpolar liquids. Our goals are to understand the underlying physical mechanisms and to develop or improve new technologies based on this knowledge, such as electronic ink displays, smart windows, manipulation of particles at the microscale and electrodeposition. In recent experiments and prototypes we noticed that phenomena occur that cannot be explained by the one-dimensional models that we developed and commonly use. The PhD candidate will continue our recent research in these new phenomena by designing and creating new microstructures that highlight the observed novel effects and that lead potentially to promising new applications. The experimental work is accompanied by theoretical and computer modelling.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Green Chemistry and Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The chemical industry is the world’s largest industrial energy consumer and the third-largest source of industrial emissions. Therefore, new sustainable chemical production methods need to be developed and deployed and current emission-intensive chemical production technologies need to be reconsidered. Electrification is considered one of the key pathways to reduce the chemical industry’s emissions. In CAMELEON, a disruptive technology will be developed for the catalytic non-oxidative coupling of methane (NOCM) via an electrified pathway consisting of two technologies: i) A shock wave reactor for the NOCM, combined with ii) a Pd-based supported membrane for H2 separation.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The IDLab Ghent research group is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join the distributed machine learning team. Our team focuses on developing efficient machine learning algorithms for perception and control; with diverse applications in industry, robotics, remote sensing and agriculture. As part of our ongoing research, we identified a trend towards adaptive techniques for deep neural networks. These techniques dynamically adjust the computational cost of processing new input samples, based on factors such as input complexity, desired accuracy, or remaining battery capacity. This approach, compared to traditional architectures with fixed inference paths, proves to be more efficient in terms of latency and energy consumption, especially for resource-constrained devices like embedded compute platforms on drones and robots.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics and Astronomy

Summary of PhD Program:

Hard X-ray ptychography is one of the most advanced microscopy techniques to visualize materials in structures in 3D at a spatial resolution better than 100 nm. However, the technique is currently only available at synchrotron facilities, with very limited availability. In this project, we aim to bring hard X-ray ptychography to laboratory facilities. This project is an international collaboration between Ghent University, University College London (UK) and the Diamond Light Source (UK) and brings together different expertise and possibilities for experiments.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Electrical Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

5th and 6th generation wireless networks use techniques as beamforming, massive antenna systems, distributed systems, and new spectrum bands to realize ubiquitous connectivity. The resulting radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) fields enable us with connectivity and wireless communication. However, people are exposed to the EM fields of these networks, and governments and the general public are worried about possible health effects when being exposed during long periods of time.

10.
Fully Funded PhD Position in Bioscience Engineering

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD position is embedded into the 5-year project “EO4PEAT” funded by the Belgian Earth Observation programme (https://eo.belspo.be/en/stereo-iv-programme). In EO4PEAT, an international team of four Belgian research groups and two international partners will develop novel techniques for the monitoring and modeling of peatlands, in particular over the tropics, by exploiting the information from available Earth Observation (EO) data. The conducted research is of high societal interest since peatlands are the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth and pose the risk of becoming global hotspots of carbon dioxide emissions after climate change or direct human disturbance.

16. Fully Funded PhD Position in Artificial Intelligence

Summary of PhD Program:

Due to climate change, an increase in the magnitude and frequency of extreme precipitation events is expected, which may lead to more intense and frequent river flooding. When a flood disaster hits, situational awareness on victim location, floodwater presence and road accessibility is key to ensure targeted and successful rescue operations. UAV systems are a promising source of information, since they offer a synoptic view even under cloud cover and do not rely on fixed infrastructure. However, their full exploitation as a source of information is hampered by battery-induced flight time limitations.
